Greetings – You’re well aware that life is full of unexpected challenges. Plot twists come into your life, your family, your town, when you least expect it. Often, it’s a nonprofit organization that’s there with a helping hand to pull you through. By being there with expertise, resources and love, they hold our communities together. TrueSongs is a chance to hear directly from people they’ve helped. And what makes a story come alive in our hearts? A song! After many months of work, we’re ready to introduce you to five local people who will tell you their story of challenge. And after each story, there will be a song that brings us into emotional heart of the story.

This year’s performing songwriters are: Peggy Lynn of Jamcrackers, Cassandra KubinskiHolly McGarry of Honeysuckle, Sean Rowe, and Joel Moss & Dave Maswick.

Our stories: a family farm in a fast developing community is preserved forever for agriculture by Saratoga PLAN; a veteran gets the support she needs to regain her health and get off the streets from Veterans & Community Housing Coaltion; a man loses his sight but gains a new outlet for his lifelong habit of helping others through Glens Falls Association for the Blind; a man raised on a Schuylerville farm finds a way to preserve the history of a changing community through Hudson Crossing Park; a young girl transcends Autism barriers with the help of horses at STEP (Saratoga Therapeutic Equestrian Program).

Caffe Lena presents TrueSongs to show the power of music and the unseen story of our community. I think this year’s show is going to be extraordinary and I hope you’ll come in person this Saturday.

See you at the show,
Sarah

North Carolina musician and folk music scholar JXF “may be the leading interpreter of American folk music right now…” (NPR) His 2022 album, Good and Green Again, shows him as “the rare contemporary to approach folk in its pure form, shunning self-penned compositions about bummer relationships to concentrate on material handed down from bygone, hardened times.” (The New Yorker)

Singer-songwriter Michael Jerling lends his poignant lyrics and melodies to author Patricia A. Nugent’s memoir They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad. In a 90-minute performance of music and readings, these two artists give voice to life, love, and loss as it relates to our shared human experience.
