Greetings – We all know that ick feeling when we’ve been looking at the screen too long. Constant connection to electronics is one of the things a concert cures best. That’s why we have those little signs on Lena’s tables asking you to put your phone away–so you can let the music stir your memories and imagination and refresh your mind.

Our artists this weekend have a special interest in mental health. They’ve wrangled with shyness and depression and racism. Their art requires them to share the stuff most of us keep to ourselves. Lizzie No said, “Self-love was a concept I firmly believed in for other people, but I always kept it at arm’s length. It was not that I didn’t like myself (well, most of the time); the problem was I did not know what the verb “love” could possibly mean when applied in my own life. My job was to be excellent. My job was to tell the truth in my songs. Loving myself was another matter, one for which I did not have time.”  She put in the work to address her problem. The resulting songs are getting such rave reviews that it’s clear that the stuff she dealt with is helping others to do the same.

I invite you to come this weekend for connection, with yourself and your fellow humans. Please enjoy exploring the music samples below.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Musician/comedian Erin Harkes continues her songwriters’ series with Jacob Shipley, Ryan Leddick and Deb Cavanaugh. This monthly showcase, curated and hosted by Harkes, features regional working musicians playing their original songs and telling stories “in the round.” Lena Go Round carries forward the original music tradition that has been the cornerstone of this venue for 64 years and has become a must-see for Capital Region music fans.

Lizzie has had a dizzying five years with the release of two stunning, eclectic albums (Hard Won and Vanity, which drew praise from the likes of Billboard and Rolling Stone) – followed by appearances at AmericanaFest, the Newport Folk Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and SXSW, plus tours with Iron and Wine, Son Little, and Adia Victoria. Her writing is beautifully intricate, the personal and the political folding into each other. She’s an outspoken activist and civil rights advocate on a mission to “make revolution irresistible.”

“Two of the loveliest male-female voices you might ever hear this or any other year.” (HuffPost) Their finger-picked acoustic melodies are lush; their intimate words “other worldly.” (Rolling Stone) Online fans have fallen in love at first listen, racking up 20+ million streams on Spotify–and climbing. MEMBERS’ CORNER
This is Mallory and Scott of The Rough & Tumble right after they played for elders at The Wesley Community. This was one of four stops they made as part of Caffe Lena On the Road, a community outreach program made possible by your donations. They also played for Project LIFT at Caroline and Division Street Schools, for cognitively challenged folks at AIM Services, and for some very happy folk fans back at Caffe Lena. Thanks, Members, for making sure the songs get where they’re needed most.

Caffe Lena has more than 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag.
