Greetings – I’m always glad to see one of our concerts sell out. I feel less glad when I send you this weekly newsletter with most of the offerings marked sold out and you call the office and say, “But I just found out they’re playing!” Thanks to a suggestion from one of your fellow readers, we’ve added a new section to this newsletter: “Just Added.” Scroll to the bottom to see the new events posted in the last week. If you stay abreast of that list, your chances of getting into the shows you want to see will be much improved.
Our marketing manager, Beth Rowen, put together this beautiful photo collage of women playing at Caffe Lena this month, which is Women’s History Month. It made me curious to see how the ratio of women in March, 2024 compared with previous decades. While we can’t determine meaningful trends looking at one month (March of the 4th year) of each decade, this is what I gleaned:
2024 = 15 of 26 performances included at least one woman
2014 = 3 of 19
2004 = 4 of 21
1994 = 7 of 13
1984 = 4 of 13
1974 = 0 of 5 (uh oh)
1964 = 0 of 4 (yikes)
See you at the show,
Sarah

This young band is rising fast in the ranks of contemporary bluegrass. Trained in Berklee College of Music’s famed American Roots Music Program, they combine bluegrass and early swing with intricate vocal harmonies, fiery instrumentals, and plenty of fun. Highly recommended!

They’re back! After a 2-year break, Capital Region band Wild Adriatic has returned to the stage with groove, grit and guitar-heavy swagger. Rooted in the rowdy spirit of rock & roll, they draw on 60s and 70s blues and soul to create explosive live shows praised by Rolling StoneUSA Today & HuffPost. With an emphasis on evolving their art, the core trio of Travis Gray (guitar/vocals), Rich Derbyshire (bass) & Mateo Vosganian (drums) has expanded to include longtime keys player Dustin DeLuke and saxophonist Mike Oehmen.

Armed with a guitar, a deadpan sense of humor, killer songs, and a voice that makes tough guys cry, Lucy Wainwright Roche is the daughter of Suzzy Roche (The Roches) and multiple Grammy-winner Loudon Wainwright III. Her music is gentle, well-crafted contemporary folk that eases us in with flat-footed authenticity, and then lets loose with beauty and drama. For fans of Bon Iver and Sheryl Crow.

SUNDAY, MARCH 17 | 10 AM TO 1 PM

Come over to Lena’s from 10 AM to 1 PM for all-you-can eat pancakes topped with Twin Leaf Farms maple syrup plus fresh fruit, coffee and live music! Our students and jammers will be on the stage making festive stringband music to raise money for Caffe Lena’s growing School of Music. Best known for his indelible songs “Donegal,” “I Miss the Rain” and “All of The Hard Days Are Gone” – which have been hits for The Kingston Trio, North Sea Gas, The Furey Brothers and others. Few artists of any stripe in the Capital Region have left a mark as bold and lasting as Celtic Bluegrass songwriter Kevin McKrell.
