This coming week really does feel like the start of a fun summer. Willi Carlisle reminds us of one of Lena’s most famous discoveries, Utah Phillips. Like Utah, Willi is a big-hearted rabble-rouser who isn’t afraid to call out the bad guys and stand up for the good guys. If that’s the kind of folk music that puts wind in your sails, do not miss Wednesday’s show. Saratoga’s own Cassandra Kubinski completely blew us away when she brought her full band for the first time last year. We can’t wait for another dose of her smart songs and brilliant pop arrangements. The Slambovians will be raising the spirits of the lucky ones who got tickets in time (7 left!).  And, as is our tradition on Memorial Day weekend, Sawyer Fredericks will be gathering his fans from near and far for “Sawyertoga,” a weekend of friendship, music and relaxation. Join us!

Three years ago we decided it was time to develop a signature annual event to celebrate this community-driven venue, welcome newcomers, and thank everyone for making Caffe Lena an anchor of folk culture. Sing In the Streets was born! Each year it gets a little bigger, thanks to the sponsors who cover costs and put some extra money in our coffers for year round operations. If the sun is shining, you’ll find our six stages outdoors. If it’s raining, we’ll be at the Library, Misfits, upstairs at Caffe Lena, and upstairs at Walt & Whitman’s. But, it won’t rain. And the rest of our week leading up the festival is superb . . .

One look at that smile and you know you’re in good hands. Peter Rowan is a Bluegrass Hall of Fame inductee who is playing the Caffe this Sunday for the first time in 33 years. With a career spanning over 5 decades, this towering singer-songwriter is a 2022 & 2023 Grammy nominee. From his early years playing with Bill Monroe, to his time in Old & In the Way (Rowan, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Kahn) and his breakout as a solo musician and bandleader, Rowan has kept it fresh, energetic and rooted in tradition.

Eight Remarkable Artists That Played at Caffè Lena Before They Hit It Big

Pretty much every Saratogian knows that Bob Dylan performed at Caffè Lena back in the early ’60s, just as he was beginning to kick off his legendary folk career. But Bob wasn’t the only one.

According to Sarah Craig, Executive Director of Caffè Lena, most of the now famous musicians who have performed at the club weren’t famous when they first started performing there. “This was an important building block in their career and in building their skills, and that’s what Caffè Lena is really for,” she explains. “The shows are always great regardless of whether that person becomes a household name later down the line. That’s just a matter of lightning striking or not.”
