Racquette River Rounders Annual Boxing Day Reunion Show

Celebrate Boxing Day with the Raquette River Rounders, bringing great picking, old favorites and decades of musical friendship to Caffè Lena.

At Caffè Lena, the day after Christmas means the Raquette River Rounders.

Guitarist Danny Gotham and singer-songwriter John Kribs first joined forces with the late bassist Michael Hadfield in the late 1970s, creating an eclectic North Country string band that never paid much attention to musical boundaries. Traditional reels and jigs might rub shoulders with old country, swing and blues, followed by Fats Waller, Elvis Presley or one of their own songs. The Rounders toured extensively, made two albums for Adirondack Records and built a devoted following before officially going their separate ways in the early 1980s.

Year after year, the Rounders have found their way back to Caffè Lena for their annual Boxing Day Reunion Show, turning December 26 into a gathering of old friends, longtime fans and newcomers discovering what all the fuss is about. And there’s plenty of musical history on that stage. Danny Gotham is a master flatpicker and fingerpicker who took second place in the prestigious National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kansas, and has performed with artists including Tom Paxton and Peter Ostroushko. John Kribs has spent nearly six decades making music, from the Northeast coffeehouse circuit and the Rounders to Johnny & The Triumphs and beyond, writing and performing an enormous range of American roots music along the way.

What brings them back together, though, is simpler than all those credentials: these guys love playing music together. Expect great picking, songs you haven't heard in years, songs you didn't know you needed to hear, plenty of stories and the easy chemistry that comes from a musical friendship stretching back nearly half a century.

Christmas may be over, but nobody says the party has to be, come spend Boxing Day with the Raquette River Rounders at Caffè Lena, a holiday tradition that's been a very long time in the making.
