Our Vision: Caffè Lena envisions a vibrant community where music, poetry, and storytelling are widely practiced by amateurs and professionals alike. Toward that end, we foster creative fellowship, preserve American folk music culture, and encourage lifelong engagement in the arts. Our mission is to inspire and connect people of all ages and backgrounds, ensuring that the arts remain a vital part of our collective experience, and contribute to civic and personal health.

Music Where It’s Needed Most
Personal experience as well as science tells us that music stirs memory, enhances learning, and creates positive emotions. After decades of seeing our audience uplifted by an evening of live music in our historic folk club, we developed Caffè Lena On the Road to bring that experience to the thousands of people in our community who don’t normally have access to concert halls.
On the Road reaches 2,000 people annually across three counties via our network of social service partners and schools. Our musicians bring songs and meaningful connection to elders, people with mental health and substance abuse challenges, free meal sites, shelters, schools, and we even visit shut-ins in their homes.
Our supporters believe that music belongs to everyone.
Reviving the Social Music Tradition
Caffè Lena School of Music is reviving the social music tradition, where families and friends play and sing together. It’s a timeless way that people have shared culture, bonded, and experienced the well-documented health benefits of making music.
Caffè Lena School of Music begins with Folk Club Kids, our free weekly drop-in music program for preschoolers, and extends to the weekly Senior Learning Jam for retirees. In between is a wealth of ensemble-based classes for kids and adults at all skill levels, where students learn by listening, imitating and sharing, in keeping with the folk tradition.
Full scholarships and loaner instruments, made possible by our supporters, remove barriers to participation for families in need.
Fostering New Voices
Caffè Lena invests heavily in fostering new voices in American roots music and spoken word performance. Along with a pro schedule designed for discovery, we provide a stage to local talent through a variety of themed open mic programs.
Our Monday open mics for musicians are donation-based and alcohol-free, drawing many teen participants, adults in recovery, and those without the means to buy weekend tickets, along with a diverse cross-section of the community.
Monthly Poetry and Storytelling Open Mics get right to the heart of what we want to bring to the community: mutual support, bravery, honesty, close observation, awareness. These qualities are fundamental to both art-making and healthy human communities.
Stories of Resilience and Kindness
The capstone of our community outreach is TrueSongs. This annual show spotlights the work of nonprofits by pairing a client telling their true story with a songwriter who helps convey the emotional heart of the experience.
With stories of resilience and kindness, TrueSongs is a major Saratoga event, underwritten through 2026 by Business For Good, that demonstrates how both the arts and social services contribute to a healthy, whole community.
