Philadelphia-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gail Ann Dorsey is widely recognized as one of the most respected bass players and vocalists in modern music, with a career that has placed her alongside some of the most influential artists of the past four decades.

Many fans know Dorsey from her longtime collaboration with David Bowie. She held the bass chair in Bowie’s touring band from 1995–2004, and her extraordinary voice became an unforgettable part of their live performances of the Queen/Bowie classic “Under Pressure.” She recorded and performed extensively with Bowie during one of the most creatively adventurous periods of his later career.

Dorsey’s remarkable musical journey has also included recording and touring with artists including Lenny Kravitz, Tears for Fears, Seal, Gwen Stefani, Bryan Ferry, Gang of Four, The National, Thomas Dolby, and many others. She has also been a featured vocalist with Blackstar Symphony, celebrating Bowie’s music alongside other musicians who knew and worked with him.

But Gail Ann Dorsey has always been much more than the extraordinary musician standing beside somebody else. She is a songwriter and solo artist in her own right, with three acclaimed albums to her name: The Corporate World, Rude Blue and I Used to Be… Now, more than two decades after her last solo album, Dorsey is returning to that part of her musical life with new music.

Her forthcoming album, The Appearance of Life, brings the focus squarely back to her own voice, writing and musicianship. Inspired in part by the sophisticated sounds of 1970s AM/FM radio and artists including Carole King, Roberta Flack and Joan Armatrading, it marks an exciting new chapter for an artist whose career has never followed an ordinary path.
