Nordlys Global Voices Series: Alla Boara
Folk Global Jazz

Led by percussionist and composer Anthony Taddeo, Alla Boara draws inspiration from the distinct dialects, stories, and melodies of Italy’s pre-industrial past—music that once lived in kitchens, wheat fields, fishing villages, and mountain towns, and has nearly vanished in the modern era.

At the heart of the ensemble is Amanda Powell, whose impassioned, theatrical vocals capture the humor, longing, tenderness, and drama of Italian life. The songs unfold like short plays—by turns playful, mournful, heroic, and achingly human—powered by rich storytelling and dazzling instrumental interplay that evokes a seasoned jazz group.

Their debut album, Le Tre Sorelle, was praised by Cleveland Magazine for its “top-notch musicianship,” and GRAMMY-nominated artist Becca Stevens applauds Alla Boara for “breathing new possibilities into timeless stories.” Their work has earned critical acclaim from NPR, All About Jazz, Jazz Weekly, SWR2 Germany, and beyond.

More than a concert, Alla Boara invites audiences to rediscover cultural memory, honor ancestral voices, and experience the emotional depth of songs that—though centuries old—speak directly to our modern hearts.

SAMPLE SONG

Recorded on June 28th, 2024, this performance features the band’s very first original arrangement – the song that gave their ensemble its name.

"Alla Boara" is built around an old Italian work song traditionally sung as call-and-response during grain harvests. The title literally means "to the work," marking it as music created specifically for labor in the fields.

This piece represents the heart of what they do: taking Italy's rich folk traditions and breathing new life into them through fresh instrumental voices while respecting their original purpose and meaning.

A breathtaking fusion of history, storytelling, jazz, global folk, and contemporary imagination — perfect for music lovers, culture lovers, and anyone curious about where we come from.
