Ellis Paul
Singer Songwriter

For over three decades, Ellis Paul has been one of the defining voices of contemporary folk music—an acclaimed singer-songwriter whose vivid lyrics and heartfelt performances carry forward the storytelling tradition of Woody Guthrie and the Boston folk scene.

Born in Maine and shaped by the coffeehouse circuit of 1990s New England, Ellis quickly emerged alongside peers like Dar Williams, Patty Griffin, and Martin Sexton. His early albums Stories and A Carnival of Voices announced a songwriter of uncommon depth, and his career since has only reinforced that promise. With over 20 albums, countless awards, and song placements in films and TV, Ellis blends personal reflection, cultural insight, and poetic storytelling with humor, grace, and depth. His latest album, written during the pandemic while facing a hand condition that threatened his ability to play, 55 captures resilience, gratitude, and the joy of still making music.

Songs like “Holy” and “When Angels Fall” grapple with loss and fragility, while “Cosmos” and “The Gift” shine with love and hope. With nods to his Beatles inspiration and collaborations with Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner, and Seth Glier, Ellis delivers an album—and a performance—brimming with honesty and life.

Beyond his music, Ellis is also a poet, illustrator, children’s book author, and mentor to new songwriters. His songs have appeared in films, TV, and tribute concerts, and he continues to inspire legions of fans who each carry a favorite Ellis Paul song close to their hearts.
