Greetings – And now presenting . .  Summer! Pin our July-August calendar to your fridge and plan to explore some fabulous music in the air-conditioned comfort of Caffe Lena. When I first arrived at this venue back in 1995, all the summer posters and schedules said “Air Conditioned!!” The system had been installed recently and it was a significant selling point. You’ve told me a lot of stories about Lena’s summer shows of yesteryear, when the windows were left wide open, box fans were doing what they could, and cigarette smoke hung thick in the sweltering air. But, honestly, wouldn’t you give a million bucks to be back there for a few hours?

A summer visit to the Caffe these days is luxurious by comparison, and the music has evolved in very exciting ways. If you haven’t tried our Spotify playlists yet, download the free app on your phone and search for Caffe Lena. You’ll find a sampler for each month of our schedule, and I think you’ll be amazed by the music you discover there!

See you at the show,
Sarah

Performed by Grace McLean

Forced to quarantine in separate cities from his romantic partner, Bechtel began to write music from the point of view of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife. Now expanded into a soaring work of concert theatre, this unique and captivating musical is led by Broadway actress Grace McLean (Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, In the Green) with stunning vocals and stirring pathos in the title role of Penelope. Accompanied by 5-piece band.

The Kruger Brothers

Swiss brothers Jens and Uwe were drawn to American folk music after discovering Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and Lester Flatts. Over the course of two decades, the Kruger Brothers’ amalgam of bluegrass, jazz and classical styles has made them a fixture of the folk world, earning praise from the musicians who once served as their role models. Doc Watson said, “The Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as I’ve ever played with.”
