Greetings – Carolyn is certain it’s because Mercury has been in retrograde. Brian is sure some part has failed. I’m inclined to believe both of them. Things could have been a lot worse than a week without internet service at folk headquarters, but we were not able to livestream last week’s shows and we really, really hate letting you down. Solemn promises have been made by National Grid and Spectrum and I have faith we’ll be back online in time for Tuesday’s events. In the meantime, you can watch last weekend’s shows on CaffeLena.TV in the “Recent Livestreams” playlist.

We have a decidedly southern flavor to our coming weekend: Andy Cohen from Tennessee, Slaid Cleaves from Austin, TX, Will Hoge from Nashville, and then there’s the outlier, the delightful Folkfaces from Buffalo.

Come visit the Caffe! We have an amazing roasted root vegetable soup, seasonal fruit crisps, great beer, fabulous air filtration, vaccinated humans, and a big smile waiting for you at the door.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Folk Heritage Series
ANDY COHEN
In-person tickets

Andy has played Lena’s stage in all six decades of our existence. He has lived the life of a bona fide troubadour, learning from his elders and passing the tradition to the next generation. He has a fierce devotion to those living on the margins of society, like so many of the brilliant folk artists who gave us the southern blues tradition. His shows are illuminating, soothing and toe-tapping all at once.

The 2021 Folk Heritage Series is made possible by a generous gift from the Douglas A. Mercer Foundation

Formerly known as Tom Akstens, this folksinger, guitarist, gardener and professor is finally ready to speak openly about their gender identity. For years they wondered “Who would want to be my friend? How would I have a career? Who would love me?” if the truth came out. Connolly has performed on our stage for decades, sharing folk songs and wonderful stories of odd experiences, stunning misadventures and quirky people. This book marks a new and joyful chapter and we look forward to hearing excerpts read by the author.

Will Hoge
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

Hoge made his debut at Caffe Lena in the fall of 2019 in a packed show with longtime ally Elizabeth Cook. His country & rock is totally outlaw, with hard-hitting progressive themes that put him outside Nashville’s mainstream music row. His lyrics look right in the eye of what’s going in America, draw you in, and make you care about what he has to say. He’s touring in support of his pandemic album release Tiny Little Movies which is getting gushing, 5-star reviews.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
One of the really wonderful programs made possible by members and grants is Caffe Lena On the Road. When Andy Cohen comes to town this week, it’s not just the folks in the seats at Lena’s who will enjoy his music. He’ll be delivering lessons on acoustic blues to middle schoolers in Glens Falls, playing at the high school during lunch, playing for homeless youth at WAIT House & for little ones at the Children’s Museum in Saratoga. There are so many wonderful old folksongs, and now YOU are part of passing them along to a new generation!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
