Greetings – We’re coming up on Travers Weekend in Saratoga Springs, which marks the peak of the horse racing season. We had planned to bring you two nights of legendary trumpeter Doc Severinsen & The San Miguel 5. However, at the age of 94 (!) Doc decided to hunker down at home until Delta abates. We quickly retooled the weekend and you’ll see our Plan B below. It’s really pretty cool, and I hope you’ll take part! We gotta keep on keepin’ on. 🙂

Below you’ll find the announcement of a Celebration of Life for bassist and friend to many, Tony Markellis. We’re hosting an intimate gathering that will be streamed for the whole community to enjoy. We expect some of Tony’s remarkable musical friends to participate, and we know the stories will be both side-splitting and poignant. Mark your calendar for Sunday, Sept 12, 12 – 4.

We’re also bidding a sad farewell to Banjo Bob Altschuler who passed away over the weekend. A man of gentle manners, tremendous kindness and commitment, and serious musical talent, he helped countless students fall in love with the banjo and get darn good at playing it. He curated Lena’s Annual Banjo Revelry and performed all over the Northeast with numerous bands, including his own Thirteen Feet of Bluegrass. RIP Bob, and thank you for your decades of commitment to the music community.

See you at the show,
Sarah
CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF TONY MARKELLIS
Sunday, September 12 / Noon to 4 PM

On Tony’s birthday weekend we will mark his passing with music, stories, photos, and memories of all kinds. While this event could probably fill a stadium, the ongoing pandemic is once again making travel and gathering difficult for many. Family and close friends will come together at Caffe Lena for two hours of celebration that will be streamed on YouTube and Facebook, followed by two hours of pre-recorded video testimonials from those who couldn’t come in person. We hope to have hundreds of friends near and far meet up online to celebrate Tony’s extraordinary gifts. Please spread the word because there is no limit to the number of people who can participate in this livestream Celebration of Life. The link to the livestream will be posted shortly at www.CaffeLena.org.

Singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey has been playing our stage for two decades. His ever-evolving songcraft is the work of a man who understands the human heart and pays close attention to the crazy, beautiful world we all share. There’s heartbreak, compassion, humor and inspiration backed by guitar work that is as exciting as his stories. You will always learn something and you will always be wowed by a Peter Mulvey performance.

Doc Severinsen & The San Miguel 5
Click here to watch the show at 8 PM on 8/28!
American Master Trumpet Legend Doc Severinsen decided to postpone his return visit to Saratoga Springs until the public health situation improves so . . . we came up with a couple cool ideas to bring Doc to Lena’s virtually. Tonight we’ll be re-broadcasting his amazing 2019 Caffe Lena show. We’ll open the venue and you’re welcome to come watch on our big screen and great sound system, or watch from home with friends and family. Doc is preparing a special message for us to kick off the night!
The video sample linked to the photo was shot from the front row with a phone. The video we’ll be showing Saturday was produced with our cameras and sound mixing.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
The School of Music is about to swing back into action with a slate of new fall classes. Kids will be learning in person at the venue for the first time! And now we’ll be partnering with our friends at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge to bring folk music lessons to Washington County kids. Thanks to the Matt McCabe Scholarship and our collection of loaner instruments, any family can participate. That’s how you’re keeping the roots strong and the branches flourishing! Thanks!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
