Ferrick is a legend in the industry, known for their prolific output and tireless work ethic. They've shared stages with Morrissey, Joan Armatrading, Weezer, Tegan and Sara, Mark Cohen, Paul Westerberg, Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Ani DiFranco, k.d. lang, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, and many more.

Fred Small

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

Political insight, human compassion, and environmental concern inspired Fred Small to seek a law degree, pursue a career as a touring singer-songwriter, and become a Unitarian Universalist minister. His folk songs have addressed being gay in the US military, the challenges of being disabled, radioactive frogs, and a moose's infatuation with a cow. Pete Seeger, Rosalie Sorrels, Steve Gillette, and Priscilla Herdman are only some of the many musicians who have covered Small's songs.

Marking the 40th anniversary of his most enduring anthem, "Everything Possible," Small has published a children's book by the same name that celebrates love and friendship, gently encouraging children to dream their own dream and choose their own path, wherever it may take them. After a long hiatus from music, Small has been playing select concerts in support of this new project. This will be his first visit to Caffe Lena since 1985.

He will also be guest preaching at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs on the morning of the show, and playing for local children through Caffe Lena On the Road.

SIRSY

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

It’s hard to imagine a sound this big coming from just two people. Local favorites SIRSY play indie pop-rock songs with delicious intensity. The band is fronted by charismatic vocalist/drummer/pianist/flautist Melanie Krahmer and her guitarist/bassist husband Rich Libutti. Their honest, instantly relatable songs, "have more hooks than a tackle box.” (Times Union) With Krahmer’s sultry vocals and ability to play keyboards and drums at once, plus Libutti's vintage Rickenbacker, they're as much fun to watch as hear. Their energetic shows include stories from the road, laughter, dance parties – and yes – even Libutti’s nerdy Star Wars jokes. Every show is a celebration for this couple who cheer each other on through all the ups and downs life can throw at them.

Join us for 3 nights of Sirsy! Each show will be unique, with a mix of full electric and stripped down versions of Sirsy’s songs plus a few surprises. Join us for one or ALL of the shows! There is a special price for fans who'd like to attend all three shows. To receive the special price, please order those tickets on the Friday, December 6th ticket page.

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

For more than two decades, this wordsmith, Tedx speaker, stand-up comic, author and troubadour, has delighted audiences around the world. Planet Bluegrass calls him “a first class songwriter with a poet's gift for fresh imagery,” and Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz says of Kellogg, “there are few people in rock n’ roll who are just so great.”

He has received the Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year award and has had his work nominated for a Grammy. The Nields

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

The Nields have been lighting up the indie circuit since 1991, originally traveling the continent as a five-piece band. Today, sisters Nerissa and Katryna perform as a duo often compared to The Indigo Girls and The Roches. The Chicago Tribune reports, “As the work of the Everly Brothers or the McGarrigle Sisters has amply demonstrated, there are few sounds as sublime as close harmonies rendered by siblings. In the case of western Massachusetts folk rockers the Nields, the siblings are sisters Nerissa and Katryna Nields, and their inimitable vocal blend is a disarming mix of clean folk harmonies and clenched Generation-X angst.”

The Nields have been lauded for their gorgeous, lilting, sibling harmonies, their wise, classic, folk/pop songs, their hilarious banter on stage, and their generosity and warmth in performance and engagement with their fans. “A masterful mix of modern folk with an alternative edge” (Minneapolis Star Tribune), and The Austin Chronicle raves, “If there’s one constant here, it’s The Nields sisters beautifully sweet vocal harmonies that sound eerily like the Roches singing Lush in a really big room. It's infectious stuff.”

Super 400

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

We're not going to pretend that this original power trio counts as folk music, but we are thrilled to bring them to the Caffe Lena stage because their deep-hearted songs are fabulous, they love the room, and wow do they know how to connect with an audience!

Joe Daley (drums) and Kenny Hohman (guitar) have been playing together since middle school. Lori Friday (bass) joined them in 2002 to form Super 400, a band that has now been honored by their hometown of Troy with a "Super 400 Day," and induction into the Capital Region Eddies Hall of Fame.

Musically, they’re exploring new dynamics of light, shade and nuance these days. The shuffling, slinky fan favorite “Honey and Coffee” might be the most infectious and soulful number in their repertoire, while the atmospheric stomper “Thank the Moonlight,” with Lori on lead vocals, proves they’ve still got fresh, thumping grooves. Life changes have also shaped the direction of the trio’s songwriting: two of their more recent tunes, the buoyant and melodic rockers “Dream of You” and “Only Child,” are intensely personal.

Momentum Series: The Suitcase Junket

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

One of the defining features of The Suitcase Junket’s music is the use of unconventional instruments and repurposed materials. Matt Lorenz, who performs as The Suitcase Junket, is a homesteader currently living in rural Massachusetts. He often creates his instruments from salvaged items like old suitcases, gas cans, and other discarded objects, which adds a distinct and raw quality to the sound. Growing up in Cavendish, Vermont, Lorenz began playing piano at age five, and later took up violin, saxophone, and guitar. During his years at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, he studied music and adaptive instrument design, a pursuit that included building a prototype for a drummer who couldn’t use their legs, where they’d be able to play the bass drum and hi-hat through a system of pulleys. After college, he headed to Europe on a $150 plane ticket, ran out of money in Barcelona, and spent a year playing music in the streets. “That’s where I learned how to sing loud, which got me figuring out what my voice could do,” Lorenz notes. Once he’d returned to Amherst, he formed the band Rusty Belle with his sister Kate and, several years later, started The Suitcase Junket with the aid of a guitar he’d found in a dumpster. Lorenz chose the name as a nod to his longtime love of collecting old suitcases, including an antique that he’s refurbished into a bass drum, and to a secondary definition of junket, i.e. “a pleasure excursion.”
Matt Lorenz’s vision, manifest in The Suitcase Junket, developed in the tension between the grand and the solitary. Grand in its imagery, sound, and staging. Solitary in its thrift and self-reliance. What instruments he requires, Lorenz builds from scratch and salvage. What parts five players would perform, he performs alone. The spectacle of his one-man set bears constant comparison to legends of showmanship, brilliance, madness, and invention.
While audiences are captivated by his solitary form and the show itself, Lorenz, who homesteads with rescue dogs and chickens in rural Western Massachusetts, is most serious about the songs. He has been building a catalog, writing a world into existence. Solitary on stage and on the road, his mind is crowded with characters, narratives, voices, imagery, sounds as wide and varied as mountain throat singers and roadhouse juke boxes, plus newsreels of the planet’s destruction and salvage. With his latest project, The End is New, which he refers to as “doom-folk,” Lorenz’s grand vision for the song overrides the how of it.
“The things I value are under attack,” he reflects. “And writing songs and making art are the methods I have for responding. I have tried to use my observations and reflections of the world bent through my fun-house-mirror mind to show what I see; a planet stressed. ... There’s a heavy mix of hope and desperation in the sound and lyrically I was trying to be a mirror to society using truth, myth, confessions and stories.” In addition to his musical pursuits, Lorenz is passionate about coffee, gardening, bees, dogs, birds, mushrooms, tinctures, making his own wine and maple sugaring season.

Peter Muller & The Kindred Souls with Cassandra Kubinski

caffe lena 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, NY, United States

Pete and Cassandra have both headlined their own shows on Lena's stage. A chance meeting revealed a shared love of piano pop, and a taste for mining the inner workings of the human heart to tell stories that inspire. Both artists have come to the intimate folk club stage following careers that took them far and wide.
After excelling at Princeton, and helping to revolutionize the field of quantitative trading – transforming Wall Street as we know it – Pete Muller returned to music, the passion of his teen years. Backed by his band, The Kindred Souls, Pete delivers songs that grapple with the push and pull of responsibility and desire, predictability and adventure, commitment and temptation. His passion for truth-telling and urge to heal is palpable and infectious.
Cassandra Kubinski is an actress, singer-songwriter and music world activist based here in Saratoga. In addition to selling out her Caffe Lena shows over the past couple years, she has opened for or shared stages with the Goo Goo Dolls, 10,000 Maniacs, Anna Nalick, Dickie Betts, Lana Del Rey, and many more. Her piano-driven pop shapeshifts from fierce and powerful, to demure and catlike in a single set. She is, in the words of none other than Billy Joel, “very similar to the singer/songwriters of the late 70s; she proves that the genre can still be transcendent.”
