SUMMARY:Online School of Music: Gretchen Peters Songwriting Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Folk Global Singer Songwriter \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	A two-part online songwriting intensive with Gretchen Peters For over two decades\, Gretchen Peters has been one of Nashville's most beloved and respected artists. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 by singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell\, who called her "both a songwriter and a poet\,” Peters has accumulated accolades as a songwriter for artists as diverse as Etta James\, Bonnie Raitt\, The Neville Brothers\, Patty Loveless\, George Strait\, Bryan Adams and Faith Hill. Her song “Independence Day” won a CMA Song of the Year award in 1995. She has been nominated for 2 Grammys\, a Golden Globe\, and numerous other awards. Part One: Sundays April 27 – May 18\, 2025 Part Two: Sundays June 8\, 15\, 22\, 29\, 2025 On ZOOM 2pm ET / 1pm CT / 12pm MT / 11am PT ( the two week break between is time for implementing what you learned in preparation for part two) Each class will run approximately 2 hours. All sessions are recorded and will be made available for review within 48 hours. One of the oldest phrases in any language is ‘tell me a story.’ Songwriting is storytelling\, and telling your story in a compelling way is all about authenticity and detail. It’s about what you say\, and what you don’t say. It’s about the truth\, but not necessarily the facts. In this workshop\, we’ll explore the process of songwriting—the art and the craft\, and the delicate balance between the two. We’ll learn how to keep a sense of creative play and when (and how) to welcome your inner critic into the room. We’ll find ways to work through “writer’s block.” We’ll learn that only through the specific do you achieve the universal—and that’s the holy grail in songwriting and all writing. We write to find out who we are\, and in the process we find out we are not alone. – Gretchen Class Description This 2 month intensive workshop with Gretchen will be divided into two parts. In Part One\, we’ll focus on: Writing authentically: how to build the back story for your charactersUsing detail and imagery in your lyricsUsing your subconscious as your compassHow to keep your sense of creative play alive and when to “invite the editor” into the writing roomFinding and fine-tuning your melody and chordsStructure: song forms and rhyme schemesIn Part Two\, you will bring your songs to play for Gretchen and the class each week\, and we’ll use these feedback sessions as “teachable moments” for the whole class. This is where a lot of the lessons of the previous four weeks really sink in – seeing the concepts we’ve talked about actually put into practice. You will “graduate” with many more tools for your songwriting toolkit\, including: Focusing your song’s POV – thinking of songs filmicallyHow to access your subconscious during the writing processHow verse order can change everythingWhy it’s better to let the song tell you “what it’s about”How to edit your song\, and what to look out for in the editing processWhat to do when you’re stuckSongwriting promptsThe care and feeding of your creative selfBring to our first class Pen & paper or your preferred way of taking notes An open heart and mind How to prepare: In addition\, please do Morning Pages for at least one week leading up to the class. Click here for a description of Morning Pages. It is ESSENTIAL that you do this exercise first thing in the morning – before coffee\, before breakfast\, before anything. Do not edit\, cross out\, analyze or otherwise “judge” your three pages – don’t think\, just write. This is meant to be stream of consciousness writing – it doesn’t need to have form\, rhyme\, or shape. You will not be required to show your Morning Pages to the class; it’s for your eyes only \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 7:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $27.11\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $30.37\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $15.18\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Bright Series: Olive Klug\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini\n\n Global Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 10 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Folk Heritage Series: Jay Ungar & Molly Mason\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 11 • 8 PM

SUMMARY:Online School of Music: Gretchen Peters Songwriting Intensive
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	A two-part online songwriting intensive with Gretchen Peters For over two decades\, Gretchen Peters has been one of Nashville's most beloved and respected artists. You will not be required to show your Morning Pages to the class; it’s for your eyes only \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 7:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $27.11\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $30.37\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $15.18\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Little Folks: City Birds\n\n American Roots Family\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 3 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Bright Series: Olive Klug\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Matt Griffin Album Release with opener Jimi Woodul\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 12 • 7 PM

Give a quick listen to this gentleman\, and let Fredericks’ sand-textured vocals and honest lyrics whisk you away to the illusion of a simpler time.” – Elissa Ebersold\, Nippertown Americana singer-songwriter\, Sawyer Fredericks\, hailing from a farm in central New York\, began playing local farmers markets\, open mics\, and iconic New York venues at the age of 13. With his deep\, beyond-his-years original lyrics and melodies\, soulful vocals\, and powerful live performances\, Sawyer seemed an unlikely match for reality tv\, but he won over audiences to win season 8 of NBC's The Voice. Fredericks released his major label debut\, A Good Storm\, with Republic Records\, an impressive blend of soulful Folk\, blues\, and rock\, entirely self or co-written. He chose to go independent for Hide Your Ghost (2018). Fully written and produced by Fredericks\, HYG sheds the high gloss major label treatment and stays true to his honest stripped-down style. In 2020\, with song premieres in People Magazine\, American Songwriter\, DittyTV and an album preview in Billboard\, Fredericks released Flowers For You. With this project\, “Fredericks is expanding his sound even more\, moving from bluesy folk into more expansive Americana\, rock and tines of jazz” ( Concert Hopper. ) The album was included in No Depression Readers’ 50 Favorite Roots Music Albums of 2020\, and several tracks won top awards from the 18th annual Independent Music Awards\,"Born" in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category and "Amen" the Vox Pop award in the Social Action Song category. “Born” was in rotation on SiriusXM’s Coffee House channel and included in Amazon Music's editorial 'Fresh Folk and Americana' playlist. In January 2021\, Sawyer released his rendition of the iconic “What A Wonderful World” with an accompanying animated video\, and in 2023\, Sawyer released The Golden Tree EP\, featuring his band and Sav Buist and Katie Larson of The Accidentals. In the spring of 2024\, Sawyer and his band returned to Dreamland in Woodstock to record a full-length album. Sample Song Can't make it in person? Stream this show live at CaffeLenaTV. The New York Times reflects\, “Harking back to Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and maybe a little Mark Knopfler\, Mr. Ritter has always been a slinger of serious ideas and high-flown imagery.” In addition to his work as a musician\, Ritter is also a national best-selling author\, having released two novels to date: 2021’s The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All and 2011’s Bright’s Passage. Released to critical attention\, Stephen King wrote in The New York Times Book Review that Bright’s Passage “shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime … This is the work of a gifted novelist.”  His latest album\, released in October 2024\, Heaven\, Or Someplace As Nice\, is a nine-song collection\, featuring legendary jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. It was recorded live in the studio over just a few days\, capturing an intimate and organic sound with minimal overdubs. Described by Ritter as his "cosmic cowboy mini-album\," these original songs evoke a timeless quality\, perfect for listening around a campfire or during a quiet evening at home. Notably\, the album includes Ritter's own rendition of "Only A River\," a song he originally penned for Bob Weir's 2016 solo record\, Blue Mountain\, and which Bob Dylan covered during live performances in 2023. Join us at Caffè Lena for a rare opportunity to see Josh Ritter solo in our intimate listening room and immerse yourself in the heartfelt storytelling and rich melodies that define his music. SAMPLE SONG  Stream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. Enjoy two weeks of access with your live stream ticket. ARTIST BIOS Erin Harkes Local favorite Erin Harkes has been called “the busiest woman in show biz” (NYS Music)\, and for good reason. Regularly voted Best Singer/Songwriter\, Solo Musician and Comedian in the Capital Region\, she’s a dynamic performer equally at home singing and telling jokes. Since adding stand-up to her repertoire in 2012\, Erin has played major comedy clubs across North America and is a regular at Funny Bone Comedy Clubs nationwide. Whether on guitar or behind the mic\, she commands attention with her big\, soulful voice—often compared to Janis Joplin—and her deeply personal songwriting\, shaped by resilience and life’s ups and downs. Erin has shared the stage with national music acts including 10\,000 Maniacs and Pat Benatar\, and wowed TV audiences with her winning performance on Jimmy Fallon’s Battle of the Instant Bands. Sydney Worthley: Sydney Worthley rings out melodies and vocal parts nodding towards Florence and the Machine\, while songwriting styles comparable to Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers shine through her songs. By writing from personal brooding memory\, Worthley strives to make connections with her audience through her raw lyricism. "Right when Worthley’s voice struck the microphone\, it was easy to hear the effortless power and true passion behind her enchanting voice." -September Sinclair   Jes Hudak : Jes Hudak is a piano-playing singer/songwriter from Saratoga Springs\, NY. She was most known for competing on Bravo's songwriting reality show\, Platinum Hit\, in which she placed second. She continues to write\, record and release her music independently while raising her 2 daughters. You can listen to her new album "Photographic Memory" on all streaming sites.    TJ Foster: Despite wearing a plethora of hats within the industry\, these days TJ Foster is probably best known for fronting local indie-punk band\, E.R.I.E. (who took home Alt/Indie Artist of the Year at the 2025 Eddies Awards!) and simultaneously playing guitar for songwriter extraordinaire\, Sydney Worthley (sometimes even within the same show). The truth is\, his prolificity is remarkable\, having put out so much music in various projects over the years\, it would be a bore to list it all. You’ll just have to trust us. Lately\, he’s received several casual comparisons to Michael Stipe\, which he’s yet to understand\, other than the fact that he wakes up most days wondering if this truly is the end of the world as we know it.  With songs ranging from achingly existential to sarcastically observant\, the throughline that connects them all is earnestness. Whether it be loud and bombastic a la E.R.I.E.’s latest concept effort “The Highs\, The Lows\, And Everything in Between”\, somber and intimate a la his 2018 solo record “First Person Vol. 1”\, or even conceptually astute like The Cast Before the Break’s 2007 masterpiece “As Your Shoulders Turn On You”\, Foster’s songwriting is rife with emotion and a deep yearning to understand the world around him. \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $21.69\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $23.86\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $11.93\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Little Folks: City Birds\n\n American Roots Family\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 3 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Bright Series: Olive Klug\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Folk Heritage Series: Jay Ungar & Molly Mason\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 11 • 8 PM
