SUMMARY:Nordlys Global Voices : Partha Bose
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAn evening of profound musical tradition and expressive beauty awaits with Partha Bose\, an internationally acclaimed sitarist rooted in the legendary Maihar Gharana. \n \nBose’s musical journey began at the age of six in Kolkata\, India\, under the guidance of his guru\, Pandit Monoj Shankar. What started as a childhood pursuit grew into a lifelong devotion\, shaped by rigorous training\, deep discipline\, and an unwavering connection to the spiritual essence of music. \n \nCarrying forward the legacy of the Maihar tradition\, made globally renowned by masters like Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee\, Bose’s performances are rich with nuance\, emotion\, and intricate melodic storytelling. His playing reflects both the depth of classical Indian music and a personal voice refined through decades of study and performance. \n \nOver the course of his career\, Bose has performed at major festivals across five continents\, led workshops and lecture-demonstrations at universities worldwide\, and mentored students across cultures and borders. His artistry has been recognized with numerous honors\, including the Nikhil Banerjee Memorial Award\, Sangeet Ratna\, and Vadya Shiromani\, distinctions he views as inspiration to continue striving toward excellence. \n \nAt its core\, Bose’s music speaks to something universal. He describes it as “a language of the soul\,” one that transcends boundaries and reminds us of our shared humanity. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nJoin us for an intimate and immersive performance\, an opportunity to experience the meditative beauty and emotional power of the sitar\, carried by a master of the tradition. \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. SUMMARY:Joan Osborne
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Bluegrass \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFew voices are as instantly recognizable or as deeply expressive\, as Joan Osborne. From her multi-platinum breakthrough Relish to decades of genre-spanning work\, Osborne has built a career defined by fearless songwriting and a voice that moves effortlessly between soul\, folk\, blues\, and rock. \n \nHer latest album\, Nobody Owns You\, is her most personal work to date\, a collection of songs shaped by change\, reflection\, and hard-earned clarity. Written during a period of profound transition\, the album explores family\, loss\, resilience\, and the question at the heart of it all: what do we do with the time we have? The result is a deeply human record\, rich with melody and grounded in emotional truth.  \n \nMusically\, the album leans into a warm\, roots-driven sound with acoustic textures\, lap steel and Hammond organ framing Osborne’s powerful alto and lyrical precision. Songs range from intimate and tender to socially aware and unflinching\, touching on themes of motherhood\, identity\, and the world we’re living in now. Whether she’s writing a quiet prayer for her mother\, a message of strength to her daughter\, or a reflection on life on the road\, Osborne’s work remains direct\, thoughtful\, and deeply felt.  \n \nListeners will recognize the musicians Joan has worked with; Cindy Cashdollar (lap steel)\, Jill Sobule (vocals)\, Dave Sherman (piano)\, Jack Petruzelli (baritone guitar)\, and backing vocals from Rachel Yamagata and Catherine Russell. \n \n“While many artists have influences that run through their musical incarnations\, what's admirable is that Joan never sounds like she’s emulating anyone. She absorbs her influences & returns it with her own indomitable style. The music speaks for itself. One of the year’s best.” \n \n                                                                                            — John Apice\, Americana Highways \n \nThroughout her career\, Osborne has never stayed in one lane. She’s collaborated widely\, interpreted classic material with reverence and originality\, and continued to evolve as both a performer and a songwriter. At the core of it all is her voice\, raw\, soulful\, and capable of carrying both power and vulnerability in equal measure. \n \nThat kind of voice doesn’t need anything extra. Just a room\, an audience ready to listen\, and songs that meet you where you are. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nJoin us for an evening with one of the most compelling voices in American music.   \n \n“I was thinking about music and the power it has\, and understanding that at times in my life music has been the real lifeline for me. I hope that people might experience the same thing from hearing songs I’ve put out into the world.” \n \n—Joan Osborne \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. Livestream available for $5 – 100% of live stream tickets on CaffeLenaTV benefit the artists. SUMMARY:Joan Osborne
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFew voices are as instantly recognizable or as deeply expressive\, as Joan Osborne. I hope that people might experience the same thing from hearing songs I’ve put out into the world.” \n \n —Joan Osborne \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. We sometimes refer to our genre as eclectic acoustic. \n \nRed Spruce and Adirondack Song Dogs will kick off each session with a few tunes then open the floor for musicians to lead their favorite bluegrass tunes and folk music\, backed up by the other pickers in the gathering. Simple tunes are always popular! So sharpen up your axe\, come prepared with your song\, and let us hear some good old fast\, high and lonesome\, some slow and low\, or a good old favorite. All are welcome! \n \nWhat is a Slow Jam? \n \nIt is a group of string instrument players and singers who get together to have fun making music. The “slow” modifier indicates that it is targeted to the following musicians: people who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting: people who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; people who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable singing/leading a song.. The tunes are played at 80 to 110 BPM and usually in basic keys such a G\, A\, D\, C major\, but it always sounds great to play in some minor keys such as “a”\, “e”\, and “g”. We will try to avoid “jam busters.” It is our hope that after this experience you will feel more comfortable playing at the many open jams and open mics that can be found in our area. \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n	\n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n \n \n	\n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $27.11\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $30.37\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $15.18\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n \n\n\n \n	\n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Amanda Pascali\n\n Folk Global Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Jun 20 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Captain Fun Lunchtime Listening Hour\n\n American Roots\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Jun 26 • 12 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Jim Gaudet and The Railroad Boys\n\n American Roots Bluegrass\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Jul 10 • 8 PM

Singer-songwriter Ria Curley will open the show\, showcasing her new singles. \n \nNamed for the Phila Street home of Caffè Lena\, the EP is a nod to Chuck’s longtime jazz series at the legendary venue and also honors Joel Moss\, his co-founder and close friend\, who passed away last fall. \n \nChuck is excited to present this evening of collaboration and new music!  \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. SUMMARY:Folk Heritage Series: Robin & Linda Williams/ Pre-Show Conversation w/ Janis Ian
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Bluegrass \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFor more than five decades\, Robin and Linda Williams have been quietly shaping the sound of American folk and roots music. Emerging in the early 1970s\, the duo built their career on a deep foundation of Appalachian and Southern traditions\, while developing a songwriting voice that helped define what we now call Americana. Their music blends folk\, country\, bluegrass\, and gospel into something unadorned and deeply human. Their songs feel lived-in\, honest\, and timeless. \n \nKnown for their warm\, effortless harmonies and narrative songwriting\, Robin and Linda have a rare ability to capture the emotional texture of everyday life. Their songs don’t reach for spectacle\, they invite you in\, offering moments of clarity\, humor\, and quiet recognition. \n \nMany listeners first discovered them through their longtime appearances on A Prairie Home Companion\, where they became beloved regulars alongside Garrison Keillor. Those performances introduced their music to a national audience and cemented their reputation as master storytellers and performers. \n \nAcross more than 25 albums\, their songs have been recorded by artists including Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Emmylou Harris\, and Tom T. Hall\, a testament to the depth and enduring relevance of their writing. \n \nOnstage\, Robin and Linda keep things simple\,two voices\, finely tuned over decades\, and songs that do the work. There’s an ease to it\, but also a quiet precision: the kind that comes from years of listening closely to each other and to the music itself. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nTheir connection to places like Caffè Lena runs deep. This is music meant for a room where people come to listen\, where the details matter\, and where a well-told song can land exactly as it should. Join us for an evening with two artists who have spent a lifetime getting it right. \n \nPLEASE NOTE: \n \nAll ticket holders are invited to attend a special pre-show conversation with Robin & Linda Williams and Caffè Lena Artist-in-Residence Janis Ian. \n \nBeginning at 5:30 PM\, Janis will sit down with Robin & Linda for an intimate discussion about songwriting\, touring\, folk music\, and a lifetime spent making music. The conversation will conclude at 6:15 PM\, followed by the evening's concert at 7:00 PM. \n \nThis special event is included with the purchase of a ticket to Robin & Linda Williams' August 9 performance. \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nSome songs are the life of the party. Vienna Teng's are the back-porch conversation you still remember years later. \n \nHer subversive choral piece "The Hymn of Acxiom” turns up in media literacy classes as well as drum corps shows (plus David Byrne’s blog\, and the occasional flash mob choir in government buildings). The angst and effervescence in “Stray Italian Greyhound” has inspired anime music videos – and bridge-building political conversations. Americana-tinged "City Hall" has quietly become a queer anthem\, a soundtrack for coming-out journeys. The electro-pop exhortations of “Level Up” have powered many a doctoral dissertation\, first novel\, and courageous battle with illness. “Harbor” is a beloved first dance at weddings and a graduation gift. “Lullabye For A Stormy Night” has been woven into countless bedtime rituals. These are songs that not only age well\, but remain trusted friends throughout people’s lives. \n \nIt helps that Vienna's sound has never stood still. Her warm\, delicate mezzo has drawn listeners since 2002\, when her debut Waking Hour landed appearances on NPR's Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s charts. But she’s built different worlds around that voice from album to album: the string-laced intimacy of Warm Strangers\, the hushed jazz of Dreaming Through the Noise\, the eclectically ambitious Inland Territory\, the shimmering electronica of Aims. She’s world-built for other voices too\, as composer for original stage musical The Fourth Messenger. You can hear how she’s metabolized influences like Paul Simon and Tori Amos\, particularly their adventurousness and attention to songcraft. But Vienna Teng doesn't quite sound like anyone else. \n \nSAMPLE SONG  \n \nHer perennial curiosity extends beyond music. In the 2010s\, Vienna took a detour into graduate school and then professional work on climate solutions\, turning in stints at the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute\, consulting firm McKinsey’s sustainability practice\, and environmental nonprofit Delterra. She also became a parent: first as a new addition to her partner’s family\, then as a birth mother herself. Those years of carrying many truths at once led to her intricate 2024 release\, We've Got You: two songs designed to be played simultaneously\, as well as standing on their own. \n \nHer love of multi-layering now informs her work with music fans as well as songwriting. In 2025\, Vienna was named one of Grist's 50 climate innovators to watch\, for the "music x action" community she has cultivated across the US and internationally\, working one-on-one with her listeners to buy their first e-bike\, start a green initiative at work\, or even change local clean energy laws. Her workshops\, held in music venues on tour\, have been described as "life-changing\," "rocket fuel\," "the perfect antidote to despair." Those back-porch conversations aren’t just metaphors. Little by little\, they’re becoming a movement. \n \nThis is an evening with one of the most singular songwriters of her generation. \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. SUMMARY:Sean Rowe
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRooted in the woods of the Capital Region yet known on stages around the world\, Sean Rowe brings his unmistakable voice and soulful\, poetic songwriting back to Caffè Lena. \n \nWith a baritone described by NPR’s All Songs Considered as capable of "crushing granite\," Rowe delivers songs that are both tender and thunderous. The Wall Street Journal calls his voice and approach “timeless\,” evoking the intensity of late-'60s Van Morrison and the raw honesty of Johnny Cash. Whether playing Mountain Jam\, Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival\, or sharing bills with Robert Plant and Alabama Shakes\, Rowe commands attention wherever he goes. \n \nHis song “To Leave Something Behind” reached millions through the film The Accountant and his national TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live introduced his intimate style to an even wider audience. \n \nRowe recently released the first single "Burn Baby Burn" from his upcoming album Good Fiction\, "I wrote Good Fiction when the world and my romantic relationship at the time were shutting down and falling apart. Tracks like "Burn Baby Burn\," "Punchline\," and "Birds" are exactly where my head was at. Out of everything I’ve ever recorded\, this one has the most of me in it. I was vulnerable\, bleeding out a bit\, but that kind of chaos is useful if you know how to channel it. \n \nI deliberately stripped the production down to the bone. Sometimes it felt too naked\, too exposed. But feeling that close to the edge meant I was on the right track. Polishing it would have been a lie. \n \nThe goal when making records is always the same for me: say what needs to be said with the least amount of clutter and find a path nobody else is walking. But you can't control the output. Songs show up when and how they want. There’s a line in "Psilocybin Playlist" that sums up the whole trip: “It’s Venus or Mars\, no matter the same pill.” \n \nThat's the unruliness of the experience. A measured dose doesn't mean a predictable high. Making a record works the same way. You can show up sober\, with the perfect tools and the best intentions\, and the music will still take you wherever it wants. The songs have their own agenda. I’m just in the passenger seat." \n \nBorn from a season of upheaval and change\, these songs and this performance will be another incredible Sean Rowe experience. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. SUMMARY:The Nields
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Bluegrass \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Nields have been lighting up the indie circuit since 1991\, originally traveling the continent as a five-piece band. Today\, sisters Nerissa Nields and Katryna Nields perform as a duo often compared to Indigo Girls and The Roches. The Chicago Tribune reports\, “As the work of the Everly Brothers or the McGarrigle Sisters has amply demonstrated\, there are few sounds as sublime as close harmonies rendered by siblings… their inimitable vocal blend is a disarming mix of clean folk harmonies and clenched Generation-X angst.” \n \nThe Nields have been lauded for their gorgeous\, lilting harmonies\, their thoughtful songwriting\, and the warmth and humor they bring to every performance. “A masterful mix of modern folk with an alternative edge” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)\, while The Austin Chronicle praises their “beautifully sweet vocal harmonies… infectious stuff.” \n \nTheir newest release\, Circle of Days\, their twenty-first album\, finds the sisters as creative and reflective as ever. Inspired by daily walks during the pandemic and the quiet rhythm of the seasons\, the album unfolds as a musical calendar with each song rooted in a particular moment in the year\, capturing the emotional landscape that comes with it. \n \nFrom the introspective stillness of winter to the brightness of summer\, Circle of Days explores the passage of time with honesty and heart. The songs hold both hope and uncertainty\, weaving together personal stories and broader reflections on change\, loss\, and resilience. It’s a natural extension of what The Nields have always done so well: pairing memorable melodies with lyrics that feel lived-in and true. \n \nJoin us for an evening of harmony\, humor\, and songs that stay with you\, performed by artists who have spent decades honing not just their sound\, but their connection to the audience. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. SUMMARY:School of Music Slow Jam
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAll are Welcome!\nWE LOVE TO MEET NEW PICKERS\,\nAND WE LOVE PUTTING ON A GOOD SHOW FOR LISTENERS!\n \nThis weekly program is made possible by the generous support of PHLY Foundation! \n \nTHERE ARE NO PRE-SHOW RESERVATIONS FOR THE JAMS! \n \nSUGGESTED DONATION AT THE DOOR. $5.00 per person \n \nOur jams are all about sharing songs\, making new friends\, and enjoying a relaxing and casual evening of irresistible string band music. \n \nALL are welcome to join the circle for an afternoon or evening playing and listening to classic grass\, new grass and folk favorites.

They are known for their virtuosity\, irresistible rhythms\, and joyful live shows. Called "a pretty much perfect country trio at the very top of their game" — The Belfast Telegraph\, this Texas-based band weaves together the spirit of Django Reinhardt’s hot jazz with the soul of Bob Wills’ Western swing\, creating a musical experience that’s timeless\, exhilarating\, and impossible not to dance to. \n \nLauded for their\, "down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation" — The Times\, London\, Hot Club has toured with legends like Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, and the Mavericks\, and graced stages from the Grand Ole Opry to the Glastonbury Festival. Their shows are a celebration of American roots music at its most vibrant—steeped in tradition yet always fresh and full of life. \n \nWhether you love swing\, folk\, country\, or jazz\, Hot Club of Cowtown promises a night of dazzling musicianship and pure joy. \n \nSAMPLE SONG  \n \n"Perhaps the first thing one notices when listening to the Hot Club of Cowtown is its lack of irony\, self-consciousness and forced hipness…Stylistically\, the band steps out from the shadow of its influences to become more than a faithful retro band… conscious always that above all else\, the music is for dancing and an old-fashioned good time." —Neil Strauss\, The New York Times \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV.
