SUMMARY:JAZZ at Caffe Lena: The Chuck Lamb Trio with Special Guest Mike Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:Jazz \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	Join us for an extraordinary evening of jazz as Caffè Lena’s monthly jazz series\, hosted by pianist Chuck Lamb\, welcomes GRAMMY® Award-winning trumpeter and composer Mike Rodriguez to the stage. The JAZZ at Caffè Lena series is hosted by resident composer\, pianist\, and jazz master Chuck Lamb\, with support from music producer Joel Moss. Each month\, Lamb invites a top-flight jazz artist to join his trio on stage. Lamb\, a member of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet since 2002\, is not only an exciting and emotive pianist but also a prolific composer of jazz\, fusion\, classical\, and world music. Through these collaborations\, the artists stretch their creative boundaries\, exploring new musical landscapes and creating spontaneous\, exhilarating performances. Hailed as one of the most dynamic voices in modern jazz\, Mike Rodriguez has performed with legends across the spectrum—Clark Terry\, Wynton Marsalis\, Herbie Hancock\, Chick Corea\, Quincy Jones\, and Charlie Haden\, just to name a few. A member of the renowned SFJAZZ Collective\, Mike blends technical brilliance with emotional depth\, bringing a singular voice to every ensemble he joins. SUMMARY:So You Want to Play Mandolin with Alan Epstein
DESCRIPTION:Jazz \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	This class is designed for the beginner; those folks who are interested in playing the mandolin but don't know where to start. We will cover the basics of holding\, tuning and playing your first notes and chords on the mandolin\, left and right hand technique and also learn to play a few songs. My goal is to get you started and provide you with the skills needed to play this great little instrument going forward. We will take things slowly\, with a focus on producing clear tone\, developing muscle memory in your fingers and most importantly having fun. Each week we will review all the things we’ve covered in previous classes. We will learn mostly by ear\, but a few handouts will be provided. The only prerequisite is that you have a mandolin\, a few picks\, an extra set of mandolin strings\, an electronic tuner and\, most importantly\, a desire to play the mandolin. Class size is limited to 10 so reserve your spot now! Alan Epstein has been playing mandolin for the past 54 years and has been teaching others to play mandolin for 30 years. Originally from Pittsburgh\, Pa and currently living in Glens falls\, NY. Alan has preformed in bluegrass bands in Colorado\, North Carolina\, Pennsylvania\, Michigan and New York. A former contributing writer for the now defunct Mandolin Magazine\, in 2002 Alan was the founder of the modern day Pittsburgh Mandolin Orchestra and has been a Wernick Method Bluegrass Jam instructor since 2012. During all this time he has made it a priority to take mandolin lessons and workshops from the top players in the world and share what he has learned when he teach others to play. Alan teaches by ear and specializes in Bluegrass and Old Time music. In Alan’s own words\, “IMHO the world needs more mandolin players and I'm here to help make that happen”. \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $21.69\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $23.86\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $11.93\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini\n\n Global Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 10 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n JAZZ at Caffe Lena : The Chuck Lamb Trio with Special Guest Eric Person\n\n Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 14 • 7 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Peak Jazz Series: Charlie Ballantine\n\n American Roots Folk Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 30 • 7 PM

Early groups such as the Blue Sky Boys\, the Monroe Brothers\, the Louvin Brothers\, and the Delmore Brothers helped develop the roots of the sound that we know as bluegrass. Each week we will listen to recorded examples of these and other duet and bluegrass artists and will work on singing and playing some of their best known songs.  This class is NOT intended for beginning musicians looking to learn the basics of their instruments. Rather\, it is aimed at those who can play their acoustic instrument\, (guitar\, banjo\, bass\, fiddle\, mandolin\, dobro) and are interested in exploring the music's roots to help them fine tune their sound with a duet partner. \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $27.11\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $30.37\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $15.18\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Little Folks: City Birds\n\n American Roots Family\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 3 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Bright Series: Olive Klug\n\n American Roots Folk Singer Songwriter\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 4 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Momentum Series: Ellen Pieroni & The Encyclopedia of Soul\n\n Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 9 • 7 PM

Eric Andersen is a towering figure in the world of folk music—a songwriter\, poet\, and performer whose words have stirred hearts and shaped the genre for over five decades. Emerging from the vibrant Greenwich Village scene of the 1960s\, Andersen quickly became known for his deeply literate\, introspective songs and striking stage presence. He’s the writer behind iconic tracks like “Thirsty Boots\,” “Violets of Dawn\,” and “Close the Door Lightly When You Go”—songs that have been recorded by artists including Judy Collins\, Linda Ronstadt\, The Grateful Dead\, and Bob Dylan. Over the years\, he’s collaborated with musical giants like Joan Baez\, Lou Reed\, Townes Van Zandt\, and Joni Mitchell\, forging a path that bridges folk\, rock\, and poetic songwriting with elegance and emotional power. With more than 30 albums to his name\, Andersen’s body of work is as rich as it is enduring. He continues to evolve as a performer and storyteller\, bringing new depth and insight to every stage he graces. SAMPLE SONG    HISTORY Eric is joined by multi-talented musical polymath Steve Addabbo – singer\, songwriter\, musician\, producer\, engineer\, and studio ace extraordinaire–on lead guitar for this tour. Steve worked on four of Eric’s albums\, namely Ghosts Upon the Road (1989)\, Stages (1991\, the ‘lost’ album follow-up to 1972’s Blue River)\, Memory Of the Future (1998)\, and You Can’t Relive the Past (2001\, with Lou Reed.) Eric on Fender Rhodes\, appears on Steve’’s first solo album Out of Nothing. Also joining Eric is Cheryl Prashker on percussion. Cheryl studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she was born and raised. She’s toured the globe and honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll and Klezmer\, to Celtic and Middle Eastern music. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen and others\, and she is the Artistic Director of the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in Ontario\, Canada. Join us for an evening with one of the most influential singer-songwriters of our time—a rare chance to witness a living legend up close at Caffè Lena. SUMMARY:Bright Series: Kassi Valazza
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk Jazz \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	Kassi Valazza’s music shimmers with emotional honesty\, painting vivid scenes of longing\, transition\, and resilience with a Southwestern hue and a Pacific Northwest ache. With a voice both smoky and tender\, Valazza writes songs that reckon with stagnation\, anxiety\, and growth—charting a path through the repetition of life’s harder lessons and into the light of transformation. Raised in Arizona\, trained in art school\, and forged in Portland’s roots scene\, Kassi found her voice through experience and trial\, quietly building a cult following with her previous albums Dear Dead Days and Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing. Now hailed as one of folk-Americana’s most compelling new voices\, she has shared the stage with artists like Melissa Carper and Riddy Arman\, and earned praise from NPR\, KEXP\, and MOJO. Her newest album\, From Newman Street\, follows that arc with poetic precision. Written half in Portland and half in New Orleans\, the record traces her personal evolution with striking vulnerability and lyrical grace. From the haunting lilt of “Weight of the Wheel” to the Joni Mitchell–tinged wit of “Your Heart’s a Tin Box\,” Valazza lays bare the highs and lows of self-discovery\, love\, and letting go. SAMPLE SONG Join us for an unforgettable night with an artist whose songs don’t just tell stories—they reveal truths. With each performance\, Kassi Valazza invites listeners into a world of deep feeling\, gentle strength\, and unwavering authenticity. The Bright Series brings us monthly shows featuring artists playing the venue for the first time. These are fresh\, contemporary roots-based bands and artists that are making waves on the national folk scene\, getting strong radio play\, charting\, releasing albums\, developing a strong following on social media\, touring hard\, and selling out venues. The Bright Series is made possible by a generous gift from Kevin & Claudia Bright. SUGGESTED DONATION AT THE DOOR. $5.00 per person Our jams are all about sharing songs\, making new friends\, and enjoying a relaxing and casual evening of irresistible string band music. ALL are welcome to join the circle for an afternoon or evening playing and listening to classic grass\, new grass and folk favorites. We sometimes refer to our genre as eclectic acoustic. Red Spruce and Adirondack Song Dogs will kick off each session with a few tunes then open the floor for musicians to lead their favorite bluegrass tunes and folk music\, backed up by the other pickers in the gathering. Simple tunes are always popular! So sharpen up your axe\, come prepared with your song\, and let us hear some good old fast\, high and lonesome\, some slow and low\, or a good old favorite. All are welcome! What is a Slow Jam? It is a group of string instrument players and singers who get together to have fun making music. The “slow” modifier indicates that it is targeted to the following musicians: people who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting: people who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; people who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable singing/leading a song.. The tunes are played at 80 to 110 BPM and usually in basic keys such a G\, A\, D\, C major\, but it always sounds great to play in some minor keys such as “a”\, “e”\, and “g”. We will try to avoid “jam busters.” It is our hope that after this experience you will feel more comfortable playing at the many open jams and open mics that can be found in our area. \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $21.69\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $23.86\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $11.93\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini\n\n Global Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 10 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n JAZZ at Caffe Lena : The Chuck Lamb Trio with Special Guest Eric Person\n\n Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 14 • 7 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Peak Jazz Series: Charlie Ballantine\n\n American Roots Folk Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 30 • 7 PM

Known for collaborating with artists who love to push boundaries\, he’s found a musical home in New York\, where ideas from all over the world come together\, and he thrives on the energy of that creative mix. Ross’s musical journey has taken him far and wide\, performing with an impressive roster of musicians including Matt Flinner\, Tony Furtado\, Grant Gordy\, Jacob Jolliff\, Ron Miles\, Mollie O’Brien\, The Motet\, and many more. Since 2019\, he has performed with the Jacob Jolliff Band\, adding his unique sound to Jacob’s latest release\, Instrumentals\, Vol. 2: Mandolin Mysteries. Ross also has a long-running duo project with fellow acoustic guitarist\, Grant Gordy. They have one duo album\,Year of the Dog (2016)\, and another currently in the works. For over 15 years\, he’s been an integral part of the Matt Flinner Trio\, alongside bassist Eric Thorin. The Trio is known for their “Music du Jour” project: every day on tour\, the band members each write a new tune and perform it that very night. After many tours\, they compiled their favorite songs into three albums released by Compass Records: Music du Jour (2009)\, Winter Harvest (2012)\, and Traveling Roots (2016). In addition to his collaborative work\, Ross has released two solo albums — Volley and Sylvan Tunnel — which showcase his original compositions and electric guitar playing. Guests like Darol Anger\, Matt Flinner\, Ron Miles\, and Greg Garrison contributed to those albums\, making them a unique blend of musical influences.  Music education plays an important role in Ross’s professional life. He maintains a private guitar studio\, is a sought-after instructor at workshops and music camps\, including RockyGrass Academy\, Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamp\, Sorefingers Summer School (UK)\, and Montana Fiddle Camp\, Great Lakes Music Camp\, and regularly facilitates clinics and teaches master classes at educational institutions across the country. \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $21.69\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $23.86\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $11.93\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini\n\n Global Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 10 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n JAZZ at Caffe Lena : The Chuck Lamb Trio with Special Guest Eric Person\n\n Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 14 • 7 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Peak Jazz Series: Charlie Ballantine\n\n American Roots Folk Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 30 • 7 PM

Suter brings an unforgettable blend of passion\, soul\, and emotional power to every performance. With a voice described as a “molasses contralto” by Elmore Magazine\, Alexis can move effortlessly from a whisper to a wave of sound that radiates from the depths of her being. For the August edition of the Captain Fun Lunchtime Listening Hour\, our playlist curator will be none other than Caffè Lena’s beloved Reese Fulmer! We haven’t heard Reese’s theme\, but knowing Reese – it will be great! The D.J. spinning those records will be the Rochmon himself – Chuck “Rochmon” Vosganian.  All are welcome to gather at Lena’s from Noon to 1 PM on the last Friday of each month to enjoy musical memories and new discoveries. The playlist is selected by a different community member each month from the Captain Fun Listening Library of vinyl records in Lena’s lobby. Bring a brown bag lunch. Coffee and tea are provided. The Captain Fun Listening Library occupying the north wall in the Caffè Lena lobby is comprised of 1\,516 vinyl albums and several hundred CDs selected from Al “Captain Fun” McKenney’s expertly curated collection. This treasure trove of folk\, blues and jazz was left us in 2015 and we share it through our monthly listening hour\, as Al wished.  Enjoy the memories these records bring back\, and dig deep into American roots music. \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm	\n	\n	\n\n \n\n	\n \n	\n \n Price\n \n Member\n $21.69\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $23.86\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $11.93\n \n \n \n				 \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini\n\n Global Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 10 • 8 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n JAZZ at Caffe Lena : The Chuck Lamb Trio with Special Guest Eric Person\n\n Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 14 • 7 PM \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n\n \n\n Peak Jazz Series: Charlie Ballantine\n\n American Roots Folk Jazz\n \n \n \n \n event\n \n \n\n \n Apr 30 • 7 PM

DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk Jazz \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	“Guitarist / composer Dave Stryker possesses golden tone\, urgent style\, and the kind of heated technique that can blow the roof off any gig. Stryker cut his teeth with organist Jack McDuff and tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine\, and that grits-n-gravy goodness seemed to mark his music: an urban tale spinner\, a sharp stylist able to improve any bandstand\, a storyteller in sound of the highest degree.”                                                                                          – Ken Micallef / Jazz Times Jan 2022 Whether performing with his own groups or sharing the stage with jazz legends like Stanley Turrentine and Jack McDuff\, Dave Stryker has carved out a place as one of today’s most distinctive and soulful jazz guitarists. With 35 albums as a leader\, over 75 as a sideman\, countless accolades—including being named Best Guitarist in many jazz publications’ Readers and Critics Polls—and a track record of #1 releases on the JazzWeek radio chart\, Stryker continues to expand what jazz guitar can be. The Dave Stryker Trio\, showcases the electrifying chemistry of longtime collaborators Jared Gold (organ) and Steve Johns (drums)—a rhythm section that’s as deep in groove as it is daring in improvisation. The trio toured as the opener for Steely Dan’s Earth After Hours tour\, and their albums are a thrilling testament to the power of a tight\, soulful jazz unit in full stride. Stryker’s style blends bluesy grit\, melodic elegance\, and an infectious sense of swing. A former protégé of Stanley Turrentine\, he’s brought his joyful\, groove-forward approach to audiences around the world—from Birdland and the Blue Note to Newport Jazz Festival and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. SAMPLE SONG This is a night of world-class musicianship you won’t want to miss. Come hear why DownBeat and JazzTimes repeatedly recognize Dave Stryker as one of the greats working today. Reserve your seat now for a night of jazz that’s cool\, compelling\, and utterly unforgettable. The Peak Jazz Series focuses on ensembles that lean toward cool jazz\, fusion\, and funk\, offering audiences a dynamic and diverse jazz experience.  The Peak Jazz Series is made possible by the generous support of Joseph & Luann Conlon in memory of Corrine Simonds. WE LOVE TO MEET NEW PICKERS\, AND WE LOVE PUTTING ON A GOOD SHOW FOR LISTENERS!THERE ARE NO PRE-SHOW RESERVATIONS FOR THE JAMS!

SUMMARY:Lena Go Round-Songwriters Showcase Hosted by Erin Harkes
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Folk Jazz \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	For 65 years\, Caffè Lena has been a place where great artists get their start—a stage where music is more than just sound; it’s stories\, community\, and discovery. The Lena Go Round continues that tradition\, offering a monthly showcase of rising songwriting talent\, curated and hosted by powerhouse musician\, comedian\, entrepreneur\, and all around powerhouse\, Erin Harkes. What makes Lena Go Round special? It is a curated lineup of the best up-and-coming songwriters—handpicked to deliver unforgettable performancesIt is a true “in the round” experience—where songwriters take turns sharing their music and stories\, creating an intimate and inspiring atmosphereIt is a direct link to Caffè Lena’s legacy—this stage launched careers\, and Lena Go Round continues to nurture the next generation of folk\, Americana\, and indie artistsThe lineup changes every month\, but one thing is constant: you will always hear something fresh\, moving\, and unforgettable. Whether you're a lifelong folk fan or just love discovering the next big thing\, Lena Go Round is the place to be. August's line-up is Belle-Skinner\, Ryan Liddick\, Ben Zoleski\, and Erin! Belle-Skinner is a dark nostalgic singer-songwriter based in New York. With a hauntingly beautiful\, lilting soprano and innate sense of melody she crafts tales of songbirds\, sirens and desert nomads – nuanced and layered stories which bridge the gap between past and present. Though her influences cover a broad range of genres – from French chansons and Russian folk to contemporary alt-pop and rock – her voice often draws comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell\, Kate Bush\, Jeff Buckley\, Mary Hopkin\, and early St. Vincent. Ryan Leddick is a queer folk/rock artist whose music is rooted in a childhood listening to classic rock and the folk music of his native Adirondacks—as well as anything else he could get to work on his parents’ sound system. The result is a distinctive fusion of life experience\, diverse influences and a strong artistic vision. When you listen to his music\, you can hear all of that echo in his unique sound. Leddick\, who has shared the stage with Damien Rice\, Of Good Nature\, and Brian Dunne to name a few\, is also a formally trained vocalist and has toured the Northeast for the better part of a decade\, in both group and solo acts. He’s now based in Troy\, New York\, and continues to travel regionally to perform for crowds large and small.   Ben Zoleski is a multi-instrumental songwriter\, producer and music director. He has been writing songs for 20 years. Once told that a song of his was "exceptional songwriting" by Livingston Taylor\, Ben tries to create songs that will resonate with listeners and that they can find a bit of themselves in. He has toured the country and Asia as part of the music direction team for Andrew Lloyd Webber's "School of Rock: the Musical". Currently\, Ben also plays guitar with Margo Macero\, keys in the band HARK\, and is part of the acoustic duo Gianna + Ben. Other artists and groups Ben has played for include David J\, Bea Miller\, Moriah Formica\, Sirsy and The Refrigerators. Ben resides in Schenectady\, NY with his wife Courtney\, daughter Eleanor and cat Atticus. His debut album of original material is currently in the works.  Erin Harkes Come be part of a Capital District must-see event\, where the best of the best take the stage before the world catches on.
