What an awesome example of a serious songwriter and musician. Problematic for the people around him\, Paul’s definition of perfection never wavered. We\, the fans benefit\, “There Goes Rhymin’ Simon” is a great listen from beginning to end as Paul and the very best jazz and rock musicians in the world\, lay down tracks with epic grooves. Early groups such as the Blue Sky Boys\, the Monroe Brothers\, the Louvin Brothers\, and the Delmore Brothers helped develop the roots of the sound that we know as bluegrass. Each week we will listen to recorded examples of these and other duet and bluegrass artists and will work on singing and playing some of their best known songs.  \n \nThis class is NOT intended for beginning musicians looking to learn the basics of their instruments. Each week we will spend time on right and left hand techniques\, learn some new tunes and play Mandolin Ensemble pieces. This class is intended for advanced beginner and up mandolin family players and is limited to 12 students. The class will run from 10:00 till 11:15 on November 3\, 10\, 17 24. \n \nAlan Epstein has been playing mandolin for the past 54 years and has been teaching others to play mandolin for 30 years. Originally from Pittsburgh\, Pa\, he has lived in the Capital District since 2008 and is currently living in Glens falls\, NY. Alan has preformed in bluegrass bands in Colorado\, North Carolina\, Pennsylvania\, Michigan and New York. The “slow” modifier indicates that it is targeted to the following musicians: people who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting: people who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; people who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable singing/leading a song.. The tunes are played at 80 to 110 BPM and usually in basic keys such a G\, A\, D\, C major\, but it always sounds great to play in some minor keys such as “a”\, “e”\, and “g”. This spirited storytelling competition is open to all participants. Storytellers take the stage to tell a true story in under 5 minutes. Judges (2-3 audience members) score the stories\, and at the end of the night\, a winner is announced. All winners are invited to ACW's annual Grand Slam at the end of the year. This year's theme is  "Go Your Own Way" — stories of roads less taken\, independence\, dancing to your own tune\, or just plain old getting lost. \n \nWant to take a turn on stage? Here are some tips: \n \n\nPractice\, practice\, practice.\nYour story must be true and told without notes. This includes scribbles on the back of your hand.\nYour audience is brilliant and easily distracted. Jump right into the action of your story.\nPractice your story as much as possible\, in the bathroom\, during your morning commute\, in line for coffee. By the time you arrive at The Howl Story Slam\, you’ll be cool as a cucumber.\nLeave the rants and stand-up routines at home. Humor is welcome\, but keep in mind that having a story with a beginning\, middle\, and end is more important than having a few good punchlines.\nShow up and put your name on the storyteller list. Lucas Pino is a tenor saxophonist\, multi-woodwind player\, and composer whose thoughtful\, lyrical approach has made him a respected voice in today’s jazz scene. He has performed with artists ranging from Dave Brubeck and Christian McBride to Darcy James Argue and Takuya Kuroda\, and leads The No Net Nonet\, a nine-piece acoustic ensemble that has held a monthly residency at Smalls Jazz Club in New York since 2013. Pino has released four albums under his own name\, including That’s A Computer (Outside In Music). A graduate of the Brubeck Institute\, The New School\, and Juilliard\, he is also the recipient of the Herb Alpert ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award and now serves as Co-Artistic Director of the Brubeck Jazz Summit. \n \nChuck Lamb has been the pianist with the renowned Brubeck Brothers Quartet since 2002 and is known for his passionate\, expressive style. Early groups such as the Blue Sky Boys\, the Monroe Brothers\, the Louvin Brothers\, and the Delmore Brothers helped develop the roots of the sound that we know as bluegrass. Each week we will listen to recorded examples of these and other duet and bluegrass artists and will work on singing and playing some of their best known songs.  \n \nThis class is NOT intended for beginning musicians looking to learn the basics of their instruments. The class will run from 10:00 till 11:15 on November 3\, 10\, 17 24. \n \nAlan Epstein has been playing mandolin for the past 54 years and has been teaching others to play mandolin for 30 years. Originally from Pittsburgh\, Pa\, he has lived in the Capital District since 2008 and is currently living in Glens falls\, NY. Alan has preformed in bluegrass bands in Colorado\, North Carolina\, Pennsylvania\, Michigan and New York. All are welcome! \n \nWhat is a Slow Jam? \n \nIt is a group of string instrument players and singers who get together to have fun making music. The “slow” modifier indicates that it is targeted to the following musicians: people who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting: people who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; people who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable singing/leading a song.. The tunes are played at 80 to 110 BPM and usually in basic keys such a G\, A\, D\, C major\, but it always sounds great to play in some minor keys such as “a”\, “e”\, and “g”.
