All are welcome! What is a Slow Jam? It is a group of string instrument players and singers who get together to have fun making music. The “slow” modifier indicates that it is targeted to the following musicians: people who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting: people who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; people who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable singing/leading a song.. The tunes are played at 80 to 110 BPM and usually in basic keys such a G\, A\, D\, C major\, but it always sounds great to play in some minor keys such as “a”\, “e”\, and “g”. We will try to avoid “jam busters.” It is our hope that after this experience you will feel more comfortable playing at the many open jams and open mics that can be found in our area. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Doors Open\n Doors Open: 6:30 pm \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n Member\n $26.03\n \n \n \n \n \n General\n $29.28\n \n \n \n \n \n Child or Student\n $14.64\n \n \n \n  \n inclusive of fees\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get Tickets \n \n Streaming\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Similar Events\n \n View All URL:https://www.caffelena.org/event/school-of-music-slow-jam-11/2026-12-17/ LOCATION:Caffè Lena\, 47 Phila Street\, Saratoga Springs\, NY\, 12866\, United States CATEGORIES:Class ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.caffelena.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/december-3-3.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20261217T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20261217T210000 DTSTAMP:20261014T182109Z CREATED:20261012T221950Z LAST-MODIFIED:20261014T182109Z UID:10006586-1797534000-1797541200@www.caffelena.org SUMMARY:Peak Jazz Series: Ben Sherman Quartet DESCRIPTION:  \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A rising talent on New York City's vibrant jazz scene\, Ben Sherman combines a deep respect for the music's rich history with a fresh\, adventurous approach to improvisation and composition. His playing is expressive\, inventive and firmly rooted in the jazz tradition\, while always looking for new possibilities. Sherman's musical journey began in middle school\, and by his teenage years\, he was already making his way into New York City's legendary jazz jam sessions\, learning firsthand from the musicians who make the city's jazz scene one of the most exciting in the world. Along the way\, he studied with acclaimed saxophonists Abraham Burton and Tim Berne\, developing a musical voice that balances technical command with creativity and emotional depth. Despite his young age\, Sherman has already shared the bandstand with an impressive array of musicians\, including Joel Ross\, William Parker\, Anthony Hervey and Winard Harper. He has also toured with Freedom First\, a powerful musical project featuring Keith LaMar\, and performs regularly at celebrated jazz venues including The Jazz Gallery and Smalls Jazz Club. With the Ben Sherman Quartet\, he brings together a group of talented young musicians who share his passion for exploration and musical conversation. Current quartet members are Roman Goron on piano\, Solomon Gottfried on bass\, Jacob Patrone on drums\, and Ben on saxophone. The quartet's sound draws on the energy and sophistication of classic jazz while embracing the spontaneity and fresh ideas of today's generation of players. Expect inventive arrangements\, expressive solos and the kind of musical interplay that makes small-group jazz so exciting. At Caffè Lena\, where every nuance can be heard and the connection between musicians and audience is immediate\, the Ben Sherman Quartet offers a chance to experience an emerging jazz voice up close. Now this extraordinary artist is coming back. Philadelphia-born singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gail Ann Dorsey is widely recognized as one of the most respected bass players and vocalists in modern music\, with a career that has placed her alongside some of the most influential artists of the past four decades. Many fans know Dorsey from her longtime collaboration with David Bowie. She held the bass chair in Bowie’s touring band from 1995–2004\, and her extraordinary voice became an unforgettable part of their live performances of the Queen/Bowie classic “Under Pressure.” She recorded and performed extensively with Bowie during one of the most creatively adventurous periods of his later career. Dorsey’s remarkable musical journey has also included recording and touring with artists including Lenny Kravitz\, Tears for Fears\, Seal\, Gwen Stefani\, Bryan Ferry\, Gang of Four\, The National\, Thomas Dolby\, and many others. She has also been a featured vocalist with Blackstar Symphony\, celebrating Bowie’s music alongside other musicians who knew and worked with him. But Gail Ann Dorsey has always been much more than the extraordinary musician standing beside somebody else. She is a songwriter and solo artist in her own right\, with three acclaimed albums to her name: The Corporate World\, Rude Blue and I Used to Be… Now\, more than two decades after her last solo album\, Dorsey is returning to that part of her musical life with new music. Her forthcoming album\, The Appearance of Life\, brings the focus squarely back to her own voice\, writing and musicianship. Inspired in part by the sophisticated sounds of 1970s AM/FM radio and artists including Carole King\, Roberta Flack and Joan Armatrading\, it marks an exciting new chapter for an artist whose career has never followed an ordinary path. Last time she visited Caffè Lena\, every seat was filled. This time\, we have the rare chance to welcome her back as she enters a new chapter of her own extraordinary career. Don’t miss Gail Ann Dorsey up close at Caffè Lena. SAMPLE SONG Stream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. Livestream available for $5 – 100% of live stream tickets on CaffeLenaTV benefit the artists. At Caffè Lena\, the day after Christmas means the Raquette River Rounders. Guitarist Danny Gotham and singer-songwriter John Kribs first joined forces with the late bassist Michael Hadfield in the late 1970s\, creating an eclectic North Country string band that never paid much attention to musical boundaries. Traditional reels and jigs might rub shoulders with old country\, swing and blues\, followed by Fats Waller\, Elvis Presley or one of their own songs. The Rounders toured extensively\, made two albums for Adirondack Records and built a devoted following before officially going their separate ways in the early 1980s. Year after year\, the Rounders have found their way back to Caffè Lena for their annual Boxing Day Reunion Show\, turning December 26 into a gathering of old friends\, longtime fans and newcomers discovering what all the fuss is about. And there’s plenty of musical history on that stage. Danny Gotham is a master flatpicker and fingerpicker who took second place in the prestigious National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship in Winfield\, Kansas\, and has performed with artists including Tom Paxton and Peter Ostroushko. John Kribs has spent nearly six decades making music\, from the Northeast coffeehouse circuit and the Rounders to Johnny & The Triumphs and beyond\, writing and performing an enormous range of American roots music along the way. What brings them back together\, though\, is simpler than all those credentials: these guys love playing music together. Expect great picking\, songs you haven't heard in years\, songs you didn't know you needed to hear\, plenty of stories and the easy chemistry that comes from a musical friendship stretching back nearly half a century. Christmas may be over\, but nobody says the party has to be\, come spend Boxing Day with the Raquette River Rounders at Caffè Lena\, a holiday tradition that's been a very long time in the making. Her music is intimate\, atmospheric and emotionally honest\, with haunting harmonies and melodies that linger long after the last note. She writes for anyone who's loved too hard\, stayed too long\, left too soon\, or struggled to find their way through the complicated business of being human. Her goal is simple: to make listeners feel a little less alone. Raised in Upstate New York and now based in Nashville\, Shea graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2026\, where she studied songwriting and live music business. She's building her career around the kind of honest\, emotionally resonant songwriting that invites audiences to connect not just with the music\, but with their own experiences. Steckler / Ikawa / Plaxico / Lewis brings together four mighty jazz musicians with rich\, intersecting histories. Their project\, Old Friends Beckoned / New Sounds Reckoned (Skydeck)\, blends their considerable individual artistry into a collective voice through original compositions where personal prowess is set aside in favor of deeper collaboration. The result is a seamless\, emotive sound that resonates with listeners. Primarily a saxophonist and woodwind specialist\, he also incorporates vocals\, keyboards\, percussion\, and electronic media into his performances. Recognized for his work with groups like Dead Cat Bounce and Persiflage\, Steckler has performed at major festivals in North America and Europe\, always bringing a dynamic\, holistic approach to the stage. Pianist/composer Yayoi Ikawa\, born in Tokyo and raised musically in New York\, embodies creativity and empathy in her playing. Her 2004 release Angel Eyes showcased her talent in a straight-ahead jazz piano trio\, while her self-produced Color of Dreams highlighted her original compositions. Ikawa\, who has performed at festivals across the U.S.\, Japan\, Italy\, and more\, believes jazz is a social art form and strives to pass it on to future generations. Bassist Lonnie Plaxico integrates the rigorous technique of classical\, the improvisation of jazz\, and the rawness of funk. His career has seen collaborations with the likes of Sonny Sitt\, Alice Coltrane\, Stanley Turrentine\, Joe Sample\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Dizzy Gillespie. Plaxico has also released five albums as a leader\, each met with critical acclaim. Drummer Tony Lewis\, a South Bronx native\, has played with Little Richard\, Sting\, B.B. You get The Faux Paws. And there's really nobody else quite like them. The Faux Paws are a band that defies description\, and they seem perfectly happy about it. Brothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand and multi-instrumentalist Dean Miller have spent more than a decade creating a sound that's entirely their own. It's wildly inventive\, rhythmically irresistible\, sometimes beautifully tender\, sometimes downright explosive\, and always full of surprises. The VanNorstrand brothers grew up playing traditional dance music in their family's band\, Great Bear\, developing an almost telepathic musical connection along the way. When they met Miller at Ashokan music camp in New York\, something clicked. His background in jazz\, bluegrass and Cajun music\, along with his extraordinary versatility on saxophone\, clarinet\, banjo\, dobro and more\, opened up a whole new world of musical possibilities. And what possibilities! Noah's fiery fiddling and remarkable Québécois-style foot percussion can make him sound like an entire rhythm section. Andrew's intricate guitar work provides the foundation\, while Dean's saxophone takes unexpected turns that might make you wonder how on earth it fits into a folk band. Somehow\, it all works brilliantly. But beneath the dazzling musicianship and playful experimentation are terrific original songs\, heartfelt lyrics\, tight three-part harmonies and the unmistakable chemistry of musicians who genuinely love making music together. Their self-titled debut album was named one of Folk Alley's 10 Best Traditional Albums of 2021\, and their 2023 Backburner EP reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Bluegrass Albums Chart. Their second full-length album\, No Bad Ideas\, released in 2024\, further established their reputation as one of acoustic music's most imaginative and exciting bands. They've also expanded their touring sound with upright bass\, frequently featuring Chris Felix Sartori of Twisted Pine and Peter Rowan's band. A Faux Paws concert can take you from a foot-stomping fiddle tune to a soaring saxophone solo\, from a beautifully intimate song to an exhilarating burst of improvisation\, sometimes all within the same piece of music. At Caffè Lena\, where musical traditions are treasured and adventurous artists are always welcome\, The Faux Paws are a perfect fit. Come ready for anything. You may not know exactly what to call the music\, but you'll know you had a great time hearing it. SAMPLE SONG Stream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. They are also masters of traditional Tuvan instruments.  Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals.  Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” Alash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). They joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a "global jam band" which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians.  SAMPLE SONG Beyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops in which they introduce Tuvan music to students in primary\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. One inspired student exclaimed\, “Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!” The Alash show is part of our Nordly’s Global Voices Series made possible by The Nordlys Foundation. If you missed them\, here's your chance to find out what all the excitement is about! With dazzling musicianship\, beautiful harmonies\, and an adventurous spirit\, The Cody Sisters are among the most exciting young bands making acoustic music today. Rooted in bluegrass and traditional American music but never content to stay within the lines\, this Colorado-based trio brings together fiery bluegrass picking\, gorgeous vocal harmonies\, and original songs that venture well beyond traditional boundaries. This is where bluegrass is going. Sisters Megan Cody (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals) and Maddie Cody (guitar\, banjo\, vocals)\, joined by bassist Will Pavilonis\, bring an extraordinary combination of instrumental skill\, inventive songwriting\, and musical chemistry to the stage. Their lightning-fast picking and intricate arrangements are impressive enough\, but it's the warmth of their harmonies and the emotional depth of their original songs that make their performances so memorable. The band's self-titled 2023 EP marked an important turning point. Moving beyond their early identity as a family band\, Megan and Maddie emerged as confident\, imaginative songwriters with a musical vision entirely their own. Their latest project\, Archipelago\, continues that journey\, exploring new textures and influences while maintaining a deep connection to their bluegrass roots. With performances throughout the United States and the United Kingdom\, The Cody Sisters are building a following among listeners who appreciate both exceptional musicianship and songs that have something to say. Their recent appearance at Caffè Lena @ SPAC was a highlight of the festival\, winning over the crowd with their remarkable playing\, beautiful harmonies\, and infectious energy. One set at Caffè Lena @ SPAC simply wasn't enough. We had to bring them to Lena's for more! At Caffè Lena\, we've always taken special pleasure in discovering and championing artists whose music deserves to be heard. The Cody Sisters are exactly that kind of band\, and we couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead for them. Come hear The Cody Sisters now. We have a feeling you'll be hearing a lot more about them in the years to come. Sample Song Stream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. A gifted storyteller with a quick wit\, a warm stage presence\, and a knack for finding the extraordinary in everyday life\, Gunning has a gift for turning everyday experiences into compelling songs filled with heart\, humor\, and humanity. One minute he’ll have you laughing at a perfectly delivered story\, and the next he’ll bring the room to complete silence with a song that gets right to the heart of something we all recognize. His music is deeply rooted in the working communities of Nova Scotia\, but the stories he tells about family\, resilience\, injustice\, kindness and belonging are universal. His latest album\, Field Notes\, recorded in Australia in 2025\, strips things back to what he does best: honest songwriting\, thoughtful observations and stories\, wonderful stories! If you love  songs that celebrate everyday heroes and hard truths\, delivered by someone who knows how to make an audience feel like old friends\, spend an evening with Dave Gunning. A Grammy winner and two-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year\, Bronwyn is a dazzling instrumentalist\, but this show is about much more than virtuoso fiddle playing. Backed by a powerhouse band of Nashville pickers\, she brings together hard-driving bluegrass\, Americana and roots music with original songs\, strong vocals and the exhilarating interplay of musicians who know how to push each other. Her new album\, Rattlin’ Bones\, captures the sound of an artist stepping fully into her own. After years as a sought-after fiddler and a member of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway\, Bronwyn is now out front as singer\, songwriter and bandleader\, making music that feels rooted in bluegrass tradition without being confined by it. Expect fiery fiddle breaks\, lightning-fast picking\, beautiful ensemble playing and quieter moments when the song takes over. There’s plenty here for serious bluegrass fans to marvel at\, but you don’t need to know a thing about bluegrass to get swept up in it. Bronwyn says she wanted to make music “that you’d want to turn up so loud\, that it’d rattle your bones.” Come hear what she means.
