SUMMARY:Old Friends Beckoned/New Sounds Reckoned: Steckler\, Plaxico\, Ikawa & Lewis
DESCRIPTION:American Roots Bluegrass Celtic Folk Instructional \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	Old Friends Beckoned/New Sounds Reckoned: Matt Steckler\, Lonnie Plaxico\, Yayoi Ikawa\, Tony Lewis. Steckler / Ikawa / Plaxico / Lewis brings together four mighty jazz musicians with rich\, intersecting histories. Their project\, Old Friends Beckoned / New Sounds Reckoned (Skydeck)\, blends their considerable individual artistry into a collective voice through original compositions where personal prowess is set aside in favor of deeper collaboration. The result is a seamless\, emotive sound that resonates with listeners. Capital Region native Matt Steckler (Matty Stecks)\, described as “delightfully eclectic” by Downbeat and “inspired by greater artistic depth” by Jazz Times\, is a versatile performer and composer. Primarily a saxophonist and woodwind specialist\, he also incorporates vocals\, keyboards\, percussion\, and electronic media into his performances. Recognized for his work with groups like Dead Cat Bounce and Persiflage\, Steckler has performed at major festivals in North America and Europe\, always bringing a dynamic\, holistic approach to the stage. Pianist/composer Yayoi Ikawa\, born in Tokyo and raised musically in New York\, embodies creativity and empathy in her playing. Her 2004 release Angel Eyes showcased her talent in a straight-ahead jazz piano trio\, while her self-produced Color of Dreams highlighted her original compositions. Ikawa\, who has performed at festivals across the U.S.\, Japan\, Italy\, and more\, believes jazz is a social art form and strives to pass it on to future generations. Bassist Lonnie Plaxico integrates the rigorous technique of classical\, the improvisation of jazz\, and the rawness of funk. His career has seen collaborations with the likes of Sonny Sitt\, Alice Coltrane\, Stanley Turrentine\, Joe Sample\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Dizzy Gillespie. Plaxico has also released five albums as a leader\, each met with critical acclaim. Drummer Tony Lewis\, a South Bronx native\, has played with Little Richard\, Sting\, B.B. King\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Cyndi Lauper\, Michael Hill’s Blues Mob\, and several others. A graduate of NYC's famous LaGuardia High School of the Arts\, his wide-ranging career spans jazz\, blues\, and funk\, with music rooted in his deep connection to family and tradition. SUMMARY:The Faux Paws
DESCRIPTION:Instructional \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWhat happens when you mix bluegrass\, Celtic fiddle tunes\, jazz saxophone\, old-time music\, folk\, and a healthy disregard for musical boundaries? You get The Faux Paws. And there's really nobody else quite like them. \n \nThe Faux Paws are a band that defies description\, and they seem perfectly happy about it. Brothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand and multi-instrumentalist Dean Miller have spent more than a decade creating a sound that's entirely their own. It's wildly inventive\, rhythmically irresistible\, sometimes beautifully tender\, sometimes downright explosive\, and always full of surprises. \n \nThe VanNorstrand brothers grew up playing traditional dance music in their family's band\, Great Bear\, developing an almost telepathic musical connection along the way. When they met Miller at Ashokan music camp in New York\, something clicked. His background in jazz\, bluegrass and Cajun music\, along with his extraordinary versatility on saxophone\, clarinet\, banjo\, dobro and more\, opened up a whole new world of musical possibilities. \n \nAnd what possibilities! Noah's fiery fiddling and remarkable Québécois-style foot percussion can make him sound like an entire rhythm section. Andrew's intricate guitar work provides the foundation\, while Dean's saxophone takes unexpected turns that might make you wonder how on earth it fits into a folk band. Somehow\, it all works brilliantly. \n \nBut beneath the dazzling musicianship and playful experimentation are terrific original songs\, heartfelt lyrics\, tight three-part harmonies and the unmistakable chemistry of musicians who genuinely love making music together. \n \nTheir self-titled debut album was named one of Folk Alley's 10 Best Traditional Albums of 2021\, and their 2023 Backburner EP reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Bluegrass Albums Chart. Their second full-length album\, No Bad Ideas\, released in 2024\, further established their reputation as one of acoustic music's most imaginative and exciting bands. They've also expanded their touring sound with upright bass\, frequently featuring Chris Felix Sartori of Twisted Pine and Peter Rowan's band. \n \nA Faux Paws concert can take you from a foot-stomping fiddle tune to a soaring saxophone solo\, from a beautifully intimate song to an exhilarating burst of improvisation\, sometimes all within the same piece of music. \n \nAt Caffè Lena\, where musical traditions are treasured and adventurous artists are always welcome\, The Faux Paws are a perfect fit. Come ready for anything. You may not know exactly what to call the music\, but you'll know you had a great time hearing it. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. They are also masters of traditional Tuvan instruments.  \n \nTrained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals.  \n \nAlash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \n \nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). \n \nThey joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a "global jam band" which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians.  \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nBeyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops in which they introduce Tuvan music to students in primary\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. One inspired student exclaimed\, “Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!” \n \nThe Alash show is part of our Nordly’s Global Voices Series made possible by The Nordlys Foundation. \n \n \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. If you missed them\, here's your chance to find out what all the excitement is about! \n \nWith dazzling musicianship\, beautiful harmonies\, and an adventurous spirit\, The Cody Sisters are among the most exciting young bands making acoustic music today. Rooted in bluegrass and traditional American music but never content to stay within the lines\, this Colorado-based trio brings together fiery bluegrass picking\, gorgeous vocal harmonies\, and original songs that venture well beyond traditional boundaries. This is where bluegrass is going. \n \nSisters Megan Cody (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals) and Maddie Cody (guitar\, banjo\, vocals)\, joined by bassist Will Pavilonis\, bring an extraordinary combination of instrumental skill\, inventive songwriting\, and musical chemistry to the stage. Their lightning-fast picking and intricate arrangements are impressive enough\, but it's the warmth of their harmonies and the emotional depth of their original songs that make their performances so memorable. \n \nThe band's self-titled 2023 EP marked an important turning point. Moving beyond their early identity as a family band\, Megan and Maddie emerged as confident\, imaginative songwriters with a musical vision entirely their own. Their latest project\, Archipelago\, continues that journey\, exploring new textures and influences while maintaining a deep connection to their bluegrass roots. \n \nWith performances throughout the United States and the United Kingdom\, The Cody Sisters are building a following among listeners who appreciate both exceptional musicianship and songs that have something to say. \n \nTheir recent appearance at Caffè Lena @ SPAC was a highlight of the festival\, winning over the crowd with their remarkable playing\, beautiful harmonies\, and infectious energy. One set at Caffè Lena @ SPAC simply wasn't enough. We had to bring them to Lena's for more! \n \nAt Caffè Lena\, we've always taken special pleasure in discovering and championing artists whose music deserves to be heard. The Cody Sisters are exactly that kind of band\, and we couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead for them. \n \nCome hear The Cody Sisters now. We have a feeling you'll be hearing a lot more about them in the years to come. \n \nSample Song \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. A gifted storyteller with a quick wit\, a warm stage presence\, and a knack for finding the extraordinary in everyday life\, Gunning has a gift for turning everyday experiences into compelling songs filled with heart\, humor\, and humanity. \n \nOne minute he’ll have you laughing at a perfectly delivered story\, and the next he’ll bring the room to complete silence with a song that gets right to the heart of something we all recognize. His music is deeply rooted in the working communities of Nova Scotia\, but the stories he tells about family\, resilience\, injustice\, kindness and belonging are universal. \n \nHis latest album\, Field Notes\, recorded in Australia in 2025\, strips things back to what he does best: honest songwriting\, thoughtful observations and stories\, wonderful stories! If you love  songs that celebrate everyday heroes and hard truths\, delivered by someone who knows how to make an audience feel like old friends\, spend an evening with Dave Gunning. \n \nYou'll leave with a few good laughs\, some beautiful songs to remember and probably a story or two you'll want to tell someone else. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. Backed by a powerhouse band of Nashville pickers\, she brings together hard-driving bluegrass\, Americana and roots music with original songs\, strong vocals and the exhilarating interplay of musicians who know how to push each other. \n \nHer new album\, Rattlin’ Bones\, captures the sound of an artist stepping fully into her own. After years as a sought-after fiddler and a member of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway\, Bronwyn is now out front as singer\, songwriter and bandleader\, making music that feels rooted in bluegrass tradition without being confined by it. \n \nExpect fiery fiddle breaks\, lightning-fast picking\, beautiful ensemble playing and quieter moments when the song takes over. There’s plenty here for serious bluegrass fans to marvel at\, but you don’t need to know a thing about bluegrass to get swept up in it. \n \nBronwyn says she wanted to make music “that you’d want to turn up so loud\, that it’d rattle your bones.” \n \nCome hear what she means. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nThe Bright Series is made possible by a generous gift from Kevin & Claudia Bright\, these monthly shows feature artists playing the venue for the first time. These are fresh\, contemporary roots-based bands that are making waves on the national folk scene\, getting strong radio play\, charting\, releasing albums\, developing a strong following on social media\, touring hard\, and selling out venues. \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. More than three decades later\, they’ve become a cornerstone of the Scottish folk revival\, known for a sound that is unmistakably rooted in tradition while never standing still. \n \nSoaring fiddle\, stirring vocals\, cittern and guitar\, dynamic percussion and the unmistakable power of the Great Highland bagpipes come together in music filled with driving rhythms\, beautiful melodies and the energy of four musicians who know how to make traditional music feel completely alive in the moment. \n \nThe current lineup features original member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals\, Aaron Jones on cittern\, guitar and vocals\, Donald Hay on percussion and vocals\, and former Battlefield Band piper Mike Katz on pipes and whistles. Together\, they bring decades of experience at the highest levels of Scottish traditional music\, and formidable chemistry\, to the stage. \n \nInducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame\, Old Blind Dogs have spent their career taking Scottish music around the world while continuing to explore what the tradition can become. Their acclaimed recordings include Knucklehead Circus\, and in 2027 they arrive at Caffè Lena celebrating their 35th anniversary with a brand-new album. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nAfter 35 years\, Old Blind Dogs aren't simply preserving Scottish folk music. Hughes’ guitar work and the duos' emotive harmony vocals are pure magic. Their music moves easily between styles like folk\, Americana\, and acoustic indie without ever losing its focus on strong songwriting and clear\, expressive performances. It’s a sound that has carried them from the UK to festivals across the U.S.\, including Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and AmericanaFest\, as well as official showcases at multiple Folk Alliance conferences. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \n“…stunning harmonies that were so good it reminded me of seeing Gillian Welch and David Rawlings” –No Depression \n \n“The Black Feathers are acoustic\, but with enough power and force to drive a sledgehammer.” –Roots Magazine \n \n“Sheer poetic beauty both lyrically and musically.” –Cryptic Rock \n \nInterspersed with their sparkling ballads they share a ripping sense of humor that never fails to leave the audience in stitches. \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. SUMMARY:Sawyer Fredericks
DESCRIPTION:Instructional \n\n \n Share:\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nSawyer-toga has become a Memorial Day Weekend tradition at Caffè Lena. Every year\, Sawyer Fredericks comes back. Every year\, audiences come from near and far to see him. And for the past four years\, these shows have sold out. We’re delighted to welcome Sawyer back for two more Sawyer-toga shows\, and if history is any indication\, you won’t want to wait too long to get your tickets. \n \nRaised on a farm in central New York\, Fredericks began performing at farmers markets\, open mics and some of New York’s most storied venues when he was just 13. His deep\, soulful voice\, introspective songwriting and strikingly assured performances soon brought him to a much larger audience when he won Season 8 of NBC’s The Voice. \n \nBut winning The Voice was only one chapter in a musical life that has continued to evolve very much on Sawyer’s own terms. \n \nAfter releasing his major-label debut\, A Good Storm\, with Republic Records\, Fredericks chose independence. His 2018 album Hide Your Ghost\, which he wrote and produced himself\, stripped away the major-label polish and returned the focus to what had drawn listeners to him in the first place: the songs\, the voice and an artist determined to follow his own instincts. \n \nHis 2020 album Flowers For You earned premieres from People\, American Songwriter and Billboard\, while two of its songs received top honors from the Independent Music Awards. “Born” found an audience on SiriusXM’s Coffee House channel and Amazon Music’s Fresh Folk and Americana playlist. \n \nFredericks continued exploring new musical territory with 2023’s The Golden Tree EP\, featuring his band along with Sav Buist and Katie Larson of The Accidentals\, and a 2024 collaboration with fellow Upstate New York artist Cassandra Kubinski on “Burn It Down.” \n \nHis latest album\, No Need To Wonder\, released on Earth Day 2025\, turns his attention toward the natural world and our relationship with it. He supported the album with full-band and solo touring\, including performances at City Winery and a West Coast run. \n \nThrough all of that growth\, Caffè Lena has remained a place Sawyer returns to year after year. There’s something special about hearing an artist with this much history in a room this intimate\, surrounded by people who have watched his music grow and change over the years. For some\, Sawyer-toga has become an annual reunion. For others\, this will be the first time hearing that remarkable voice from just a few feet away. Either way\, we look forward to welcoming you in. \n \nSawyer-toga is back at Caffè Lena\, and remember: the last four years have sold out. \n \nSAMPLE SONG \n \nStream this show live at Caffè Lena TV. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s\, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries\, but also the leap into electronic typesetting\, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages\, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. \n \nWhy do we use it? \n \nIt is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters\, as opposed to using 'Content here\, content here'\, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text\, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years\, sometimes by accident\, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like). \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n	\n \n Similar Events\n \n View All\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n	\n \n\n Mandolin Vitamins – Tunes\, Techniques and Ensemble Music\n\n American Roots Instructional\n \n \n \n \n class\n \n \n \n \n Oct 26 • 10 AM \n \n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n	\n \n\n After School Folk Ensemble with Oona Grady and James Gascoyne\n\n American Roots Bluegrass Celtic Folk Instructional\n \n \n \n \n class\n \n \n \n \n Oct 28 • 2:30 PM \n \n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n Caffè Lena\n	\n	\n \n\n Pub Sing – Hosted by PSG (The Pick’n’ & Sing’n’ Gather’n’)\n\n Instructional\n \n \n \n \n class\n \n \n \n \n Oct 28 • 7 PM
