Hailing from the Metro-Detroit area\, this dynamic group blends a variety of original compositions—penned by all members—with influences as wide-ranging as Herbie Hancock’s harmonic genius\, Frank Zappa’s adventurous spirit\, and Steve Lehman’s rhythmic sophistication. Formed during their freshman year at the University of Michigan\, the quintet has honed its sound under the guidance of jazz greats Terrell Stafford\, Robert Hurst\, Brian Lynch\, Andy Milne\, Ellen Rowe\, Caroline Davis\, and Chuck Bergeron. Their collaborative approach has led to a distinctive voice in the modern jazz landscape—fresh\, daring\, and deeply rooted in tradition. Mercer Patterson (piano)\, Connor Hoyt (saxophone)\, Ryan Venora (trumpet)\, Jack Nissen (bass)\, and Philip Buchman (drums) have brought their music to stages across the country\, from the Detroit Jazz Festival and Aspen-Snowmass Jazz to New York’s Shapeshifter Lab\, San Francisco’s Mr. Tipples\, and beyond.
