Greetings – Tribute shows have become extremely popular, but behind the scenes they’re a bit controversial. On the upside, for the audience the feeling of traveling back in time and hearing favorite songs again is heart-warming. It’s the kind of comfort a lot of people are looking for in a world that feels full of change. For the venues, it’s the most reliable way to sell tickets. On the down side, tributes don’t provide musical artists with the opportunity to share original work that reflects on today’s world. Caffe Lena has largely eschewed tributes. Saturday’s tribute to Odetta is different. Odetta, once a household name, sang traditional folk songs. Many people have sung those same songs, but Odetta sang them unlike anyone else. She sang field hollers and folksongs with majesty, and infused every note with the whole story of America. It is that commitment and passion that Gina Coleman is paying tribute to when she sings the songs Odetta made famous. That’s a tribute show I can get behind. On the brink of a national election, it feels like a perfect time to revisit the songs that helped our people through hard times and powered their liberation.

See you at the show,
Sarah

This string band reimagines Jerry Garcia’s music with a unique bluegrass twist, using the instruments that first inspired him. Drawing from Garcia’s Jug Band days, Old & In the Way, and the Grateful Dead, they deliver innovative interpretations, weaving decades of musical history into a high-energy tribute.

We normally feature first-timers in the Bright Series, but this familiar face from Nashville (formerly of The Stray Birds) is enjoying some hard-won creative flourishing so we’re celebrating her all over again. Her brand new record blends folk, rock & pop, with elements of Americana and alt-country. She’s been winning new fans through her work with The Wood Brothers, Aoife O’Donovan, John Craigie, Molly Tuttle, Lindsay Lou, and Steve Poltz.

This passion project has been brewing since the mid-’90s for this blues band’s lead singer, Gina Coleman, who believes that Odetta’s African-American folk music is most certainly blues. The band’s first tribute to Odetta spent 24 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Roots Music Report Traditional Folk Album Chart in 2023. Tonight we celebrate the release of album #2 in their Odetta tribute series.

“Like a campfire, he is mesmerizing, slightly dangerous
and always a good time.” – NBC New York

Stelling’s new work since achieving sobriety in 2017 sees the feverish soul-scraping of his early years replaced by wisdom, intimacy, lyrical depth and masterful musicianship, appealing to fans of polished pop and rustic folk alike.
