It turns out that this Tony-nominated jazz star fits perfectly in a folk club. Down to earth, so smart, and full of wonderful stories, we’ve had a fabulous time with Ann Hampton Callaway since we first welcomed her in 2019.

Greetings – Once in a while, you get the opportunity to see yourself, or your town, or your work through the eyes of someone else. This time of year in Saratoga, with the town packed with visitors, we have a chance to see with fresh eyes our beautiful old buildings (the details!), all the statues and fountains in Congress Park, and the independent music venues. SPAC, Putnam Place, a bunch of brew pubs with local bands, and Caffe Lena–all offering such different shows; each doing a great job doing what they do. Pretty cool.

The line-up for this week is just astounding for a small venue like ours. These artists are playing for thousands and thousands of people on their summer tours, and we get to see them in our little living room on Phila Street. Music reviewer Don Wilcock wrote in his review of this past weekend’s John McEuen concert, “when you’re on tour, we (the Capital District) can be just another stop on an arduous road warrior odyssey. The Caffe Lena is a singular exception to that rule. Nearly every artist I interview prior to performing there tells me in advance that the Caffe Lena performance is one for the resume.” So come take your seat, say hi to the folks at your table, and settle in for a wonderful night of music. Then go for a stroll downtown after the show. You’ll have lots of company, and you’re bound to see something memorable.

See you at the show,
Sarah

“Mike Tucker is a great saxophonist with a warm sound, and stunning technique” – Michael “Dr. Sax” Brecker, 11x Grammy winner

Our resident jazz master, Chuck Lamb, has invited Grammy-nominated saxophonist Mike Tucker to join the trio this month. Rich Syracuse will be on bass, and Peter O’Brien on drums. Tucker is most widely known for his work with legendary trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Beyond the jazz world, Tucker’s deep love for R&B and soul have led to gigs and performances with George Duke, Lettuce, Soullive, Melvin Sparks, The Motet, Fred Welsley, Pee Wee Ellis, Robin Mckelle, Nigel Hall, and many others. Expect an exciting, high-energy edition of the Jazz @ Caffe Lena Series tonight!

This “gang of sweet angels punching you in the heart” has been on our bucket list since we fell in love with them in 2019. Hailing from California, the trio delves into hopeful love, honest self-reflection, and pursuits of social justice. Oh, and they can be seriously funny, as you’ll see if you check out that sample song.

With a raw and emotive voice, NYC songwriter Pug is known for his lyrical acumen and plaintive harmonica. Paste magazine writes: “Unless your surname is Dylan, Waits, Ritter or Prine, you could face-palm yourself to death trying to pen songs half as inspired.” He has played Newport and Bonaroo and toured with Steve Earle and Levon Helm.

Finding Beauty: Inspired Classics & Originals

Tony Award nominee and Women Songwriters Hall of Famer Ann Hampton Callaway brings her new show, Finding Beauty: Inspired Classics and Originals, to the intimate comfort of Caffe Lena. Along with her own songs, Callaway’s show comprises classics from her main inspirations: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Paul Simon, and many more. Album Release: Positively 4th St. A Tribute to Bob Dylan

She’s a 7x Blues Music Award Winner and the standard bearer for American roots blues. Block steps outside the blues to honor a familiar figure from her girlhood growing up on 4th and Jones in Greenwich Village. Known for her unadorned power and truth, Block’s musical ethos parallels Dylan’s commitment to artistic honesty.
