Greetings – We had the BEST time with Glen David Andrews when he and his band made their Caffe Lena debut last summer, and he’s been telling us that this summer’s show is going to be even better! For one thing, he’s planning to parade up from Phila Street, with the whole band playing, up the stairs and right to the stage. From that point on, we’ll be having a NOLA-style party of brass, keys, drums and fabulous singing. This show is part of our Momentum Series, which means you can expect fun music, plenty of cheering, and maybe even a little dancing.

Transporting us in a whole different way is none other than John Pizzarelli, who will be performing with his trio for a double-header on Sunday. As fans of his NPR show, Radio Deluxe, know, John is a gracious, soothing, charming guitarist and singer.  Also take note that our very own jazzy charmer, Chuck Lamb, brings us a late addition to the schedule, a special show on Tuesday celebrating new works by Jeff Lederer (sax) and John Menegon (bass).

See you at the show,
Sarah

Half of 2024 is now in the rearview, and we want to let you know how things are going. Please enjoy reading about the cultural & community impact of Caffe Lena, and meet some of the folks who are making it all happen.
– WEEK AT A GLANCE –
– HIGHLIGHTS –

This month our resident jazz master, Chuck Lamb, is joined by special two special guests: saxophonist Jeff Lederer, who will feature pieces from his most recent album, Eightfold Path, and bassist John Menegon, who is celebrating the release of Sound Embrace. Harvey Sorgen will be on drums. Expect thrilling forays into odd meters and different grooves unleashed by these four exceptional musicians.

Lederer is a bold innovator, reaching beyond jazz for inspiration. His work has reimagined Shaker religious music, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and embraced Salsa and other Latin music styles. His newest work reflects his commitment to music as a spiritual practice, and a path to joy and liberation.

Bassist Menegon is a regular in the Jazz at Caffe Lena series. First cutting his teeth in Montreal, Menegon has been active in the NYC scene for a couple decades, gigging with David “Fathead” Newman, Kenny Burrell, Pat Metheny, Jimmy Cobb, Slide Hampton, Sheila Jordan, Lee Konitz, and many others. His original compositions are rooted in Free Bop.

Novelist Binnie Kirshenbaum (Hester Among the Ruins, Rabbits for Food) has penned six novels that have been chosen as Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, NPR, Time, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Washington Post. She has twice won Critics Choice Awards.

Phillips and Kirshenbaum will share readings from some of their latest works.

MEMBERS’ CORNER

Our School of Music just wrapped up a one-week summer camp and is heading into another. The kids built ukuleles out of cigar boxes, learned to play them, climbed trees, wrote songs, and made friends. There are plenty of summer music programs for kids with dreams of fame. There are far fewer that pass along the folk tradition of making music rooted in friendship & community. Our members make this program affordable for all local families. Thank you!

Caffe Lena’s members are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag.
