Greetings – I’ve been watching the growing popularity of drag shows with interest, knowing that fans find the artform liberating and joyful. But I didn’t see Caffe Lena as a stage for drag until I encountered Flamy Grant showcasing at the Folk Alliance International conference last winter. Several people I trusted from Philadelphia Folk Festival and Kerrville Folk Festival grabbed me in passing and said I had to go see Flamy! They were absolutely right. She gives the kind of show that leaves you feeling smarter, more connected, and like you’re part of creating something good. This Tuesday: Caffe Lena’s first drag performer. Makin’ history.

Freihofer’s Jazz Fest is this weekend at SPAC. Their line-up is spectacular, but if jazz or outdoor shows aren’t your thing, Caffe Lena’s line-up is pretty darn spectacular, too! 🙂  Please enjoy listening to the sample songs and come see us at the Caffe!

See you at the show,
Sarah

P.S. Our neighbor is asking for some help! See below.

Flamy Grant is an acclaimed drag queen from western North Carolina who blends folk, gospel, and roots, transporting audiences with therapeutic, theatrical storytelling and song. Her debut record, Bible Belt Baby, garnered international attention when it reached the #1 spot on the iTunes Christian Charts. She won the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition. With a bold lip, a big lash, and a blistering voice, Flamy takes audiences to a soulful, uplifting church of her own making.

Canadian non-binary songwriter Taylor Abrahamse floats blissfully between the borders of song, gender & genre with their deftly crafted, hook-laden pop. A Paul Simon/Jim Carrey crossbreed, they’ll leave you laughing, touched, and even singing along – if you can reach that high.

Angelina Valente is the Capital Region’s reigning #1 singer-songwriter, having taken home Songwriter of the Year, Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year at this year’s Eddie Awards. Her intimate, uninhibited voice and sincere indie-folk lyrics draw listeners in close with themes of small town roots and love of nature, while her gregarious personality provides plenty of laughs and stories between songs.

Openers The Cody Sisters of Colorado are Megan (guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Maddie (guitar, banjo, vocals), with friend Will on bass, playing original, exhilarating, heartwarming songs rooted in traditional American acoustic music.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet. featuring Chris and Dan Brubeck, Mike DeMicco and Chuck Lamb, showcases the best of “straight-ahead” jazz on the eve of Freihofer’s Jazz Fest weekend at SPAC. Their “music is both relaxed and expressive, and their joy in its creation is contagious. There’s nothing out there that comes close to their unique blend of inventiveness.” –All About Jazz

“Heavenly harmonies and glorious songwriting. Every song is toe-curlingly beautiful.”
-Robert Resnick, VPR

This Vermont father-daughter duo performs a beautiful, nostalgic blend of folk, bluegrass & Americana. They’re on a roll, with a recent #1 song and #1 album on the national folk charts, and a live show that has been called “mesmerizing” and a “must see.” Their repertoire includes traditional songs ranging from beautiful ballads to powerful, bluesy, bluegrass-tinged numbers.

For 50 years the Stony Creek Band has thrilled fans with their high energy blend of rock, folk, country and bluegrass; a sound that is “a product of the landscape as authentically upstate as any Hudson River School painting, or sculpture by David Smith” and performed in a manner described by one reviewer as “a ferocious ensemble attack; like a runaway train!”
