Greetings – While the major pop stars get the lion’s share of attention, there are many awards given out at the Grammys and Caffe Lena artists had some wins! The biggest stand-out is Allison Russell (two Grammys!) who first played our stage with Po’ Girl in 2008, and then several times with Birds of Chicago. We also congratulate Bela FleckMolly Tuttle and Bobby RushLarry Campbell (at Lena’s June 7 & June 8), who played violin for the best moment of the night: Tracy Chapman and Luke Comb’s performance of “Fast Car.” Combs’ 2023 cover resulted in Tracy Chapman being the first Black songwriter to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year.

The Flurry Festival will take over Saratoga this weekend. The City Center will be packed with dances, music and workshops. A longstanding Flurry tradition is the “Official Decompression Concert” down at Caffe Lena on Sunday evening–one last special show before going back to the real world. The public is encouraged to join us for an intimate performance by Hubby Jenkins of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Rhiannon Giddens’ band.

Happy Valentine’s Day & See you at the show,
Sarah

Best known locally as the clarinetist for Hot Club of Saratoga, Greene has spent the better part of the past two years living and performing in NYC, New Orleans, Paris and Barcelona. Tonight he celebrates the release of his first swing album with some of the most in-demand Northeast-based musicians: vocalist Georgia Heers, pianist Gordon Webster, Nick Russo on guitar, Dylan Perrillo on bass, and Jay Lepley on drums. Not to be missed!

Since the ’70s, when she launched her career at Caffe Lena, Christine has poked fun at the ills of society, contemporary culture and, of course, herself. But don’t be fooled! She’s an acute observer of the human condition. Masked within her side-splitting lyrics and onstage pranks (baton twirling! looping!) are tender, sincere tales that remind us that moments of shared laughter are indeed precious.

The Folk Heritage Series is made possible by the Charlie Pickett & Kathleen Rehl Endowment Fund.

One of the nation’s top bluegrass acts started on a farm in the Canadian border town of Ellenburg Depot, NY. These boys can pick. They sing like only brothers can. And they write a darn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released hugely successful albums on Sugar Hill and Rounder. Tonight we’ll be serenaded Leigh and Eric Gibson and long-time bassist Mike Barber.

His musical education started as a busker, developing guitar and vocal skills on the sidewalks and subway platforms of New York City. He took his show on the road, playing the streets, coffee shops, bars, and house parties of cities around the country before becoming acquainted with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. From 2010 to 2014 he was an integral part of the Grammy award-winning group. Since 2015, he has been an active touring and recording member of the Rhiannon Giddens band, as well as performing solo.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
This past weekend Caffe Lena collaborated with 6 volunteer-driven local organizations. Our celebration of Black History Month with Crys Matthews on Friday featured info tables from Saratoga Pride, Camp Stomping Ground, Saratoga Youth Safe Space and MLK Saratoga, as well as a fun art activity by CREATE Community Studios. On Saturday, Sustainable Saratoga used our kitchen throughout the day to wash ceramic chowder bowls, helping to reduce the waste generated by Chowderfest. Your support for Caffe Lena has a positive impact on the health of our whole community. Thank You!

Caffe Lena more than 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag.
