Greetings – This is a very strong week artistically. You can come any one of these nights and know that you’ll have a wonderful time. There’s house favorite Honeysuckle and the absolutely exquisite Ensemble Sangineto. On the rowdy side there’s Professor Louie. And blending somber and toe-tapping there’s the brilliant stringband music of Lonesome Ace.

I also wanted to share this Leonard Bernstein quote you may have heard, as it has been called upon numerous times since he first said it following the assasination of JFK: “. . . Sorrow and rage will not inflame us to seek retribution; rather they will inflame our art. Our music will never again be quite the same. This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”

These master musicians bring grit, skill and abandon to Americana music, bridging old-time, bluegrass and folk traditions. Their unusual blend of fiddle (John Showman), clawhammer banjo (Chris Coole), and upright bass (Max Heineman) is paired with spine-tingling harmonies. They’ve become festival favorites at Rockygrass, Celtic Connections, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Merlefest and regularly tour the USA, UK, Germany and, of course, Canada. Fast-rising folk duo Basset opens.

This all-star Woodstock 5-piece formed as the studio backing band for The Band. Their dazzling blues, rock, folk, gospel and roots has garnered them a Grammy nomination, a place in the NYS Blues Hall of Fame and widespread radio play. Born to entertain a crowd, they are “Roots Music Royalty.”

This clinic is brought to the community by a collaboration of Jill Burnham RN-BCEN of “Mark and Jill Sing the Blues,” Saratoga Hospital, Sight & Sound Vision Care for the Music Industry, Hudson Headwaters, 1of1 Custom earplugs and Caffè Lena with support from Live Music Society.

This Italian trio explores European folk music from Ireland, Scotland, Breton & Italy. They merge folk with classical music, Gregorian chant and pop. Pure, airy tones of harp, bowed psaltery and guitar pair with three-part harmony to create stunningly beautiful music.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
Ever since Lena Spencer fed, housed, babysat and otherwise took care of her musicians like family members, Caffe Lena has enjoyed a reputation for treating its artists well. This weekend’s Creative Community Health & Wellness Clinic is a new addition to this tradition of care and hospitality. Last year’s debut clinic caught some serious problems early and follow-up care was provided by the wonderful folks at Saratoga Hospital free of charge.Twenty-four musicians were provided with free custom-molded ear protection that is invaluable for longevity in this profession. Thanks for fueling this caring, creative community!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
