Set during the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, this film focuses on the FBI sting targeting Yassin Aref, an imam at an Albany mosque, and Mohammed Hossain, owner of a nearby pizza shop. In the context of heightened distrust surrounding Muslims at the time, both were convicted of money laundering and terrorism and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The convictions were controversial, with many advocating for their release. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Masood Haque, and civil rights lawyer Kathy Manley, counsel for Imam Yassin Aref.

In homage to National Hispanic Heritage month, Skidmore is hosting a series of events that will kick off with this duo from El Paso, Texas. They draw on a mix of history, music, and spoken-word poetry, exploring the liminal space of the border and its residents over time. They recreate the past using the voices of those who lived it, conjuring perspectives as diverse as legendary mystic Teresa Urrea, ancient footsteps in the White Sands of New Mexico, and the daughter of Pancho Villa’s bandleader.

A day-long celebration of two decades of monthly poetry nights curated and hosted by Carol Graser. Mary Panza hosts an afternoon of open mic readings. Sign up is already full for this event. At 8 PM, we feature Martín Espada with openers Sarah Giragosian and Roger Wyze Smith. National Book Award winner Espada, a renowned poet and champion of social justice, has spent his career weaving powerful verses that resonate with the struggles and triumphs of marginalized communities. With an uncanny ability to illuminate the human experience through language, Espada’s work delves into themes of identity, history, labor, and the relentless pursuit of equality. After he reads, Espada will take questions from the audience, and will then be available to sign books.

Sexton returns with what Rolling Stone calls his “soul-marinated voice,” acoustic guitar, and a suitcase full of heartfelt songs. Still fiercely independent and headlining venues from The Fillmore to Carnegie Hall, Sexton has influenced a generation of contemporary artists. His songs are often heard in film and TV, but it’s his live show that keep fans hooked.
