Greetings – Someone recently told me they make their New Year’s resolution at the start of September. I get it. After all those years of school, it does feel like the year starts in September. Well, we’re in back-to-school mode here at Folk Headquarters and if you would like to resolve to put those fingers to work, we’d love to welcome you to a class. In addition to our wonderful after-school program for kids, we have beginner-friendly sessions for adults starting this month. These classes are a way to make friends, dust off old skills or develop new ones, and put some extra color in your fall.

There are some really neat shows this week. Storytelling and poetry to start us off. Fresh takes on folk on Thursday and Friday, superb jazz with a trio of first-timers on Saturday, roots rock with some local legends on Sunday. Enjoy sampling the songs, and come see us!

See you at the show,
Sarah

Singer-songwriter/fiddler Sara Milonovich leads her band Daisycutter with a heady harvest of original roots rock and alt-Americana. Their shows are packed with atmospheric songs that linger long after you leave. Milonovich was named 2022 Americana Artist of the Year at the Capital District Thomas Edison Music Awards.

Former frontman of Barefoot Truth, Evans sits on stage alone and creates amazingly rich sounds using live-looping, didgeridoo, hand pan drum, percussive beatboxing, acoustic guitar, steel drums and layers of soulful vocals. His songs touch on family, love, hope and protecting the earth.
Influenced by ’60s and ’70s rock and pop, musical theater, folk, blues, soul, psychedelia, funk and bluegrass, Hayley Jane has many ways to captivate an audience. Her duo, Say Darling, with Ryan Montbleau has been a hit at Lena’s.

These artists enjoy an international reach and perform at the top of the jazz field. Born in Tokyo, pianist Yayoi Ikawa embodies ingenuity and compassion. Bassist Lonnie Plaxico blends the rigorous technique of classical, the improvisation of jazz, and the rawness of funk. Described in Downbeat as “delightfully eclectic” and in Jazz Times as “inspired by greater artistic depth,” Matthew Steckler, aka Matty Stecks is a saxophonist/woodwind specialist.

This five-piece band is a regional institution – entertaining generations of music lovers with folk, bluegrass, country & rock. It’s a sound that is “a product of the landscape as authentically upstate as any Hudson River School painting, or sculpture by David Smith” and performed in a manner described by one reviewer as “a ferocious ensemble attack; like a runaway train!”
