Greetings – The word “Grammy” pops up a few times in the artist bios below. How is it that this little venue attracts the best of the best? You can learn the answer to that question in this episode of “Towards a Kinder Public” podcast (click, then scroll down for the play button). Architect Cevan Castle asked me some very interesting and unusual questions about this special space where Caffe Lena has presented shows since 1960. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about this storied venue that you are a part of!

We’ve got some fabulous jazz–vintage and modern–a 3x Grammy-winning songwriter, one of Judy Collins’ favorite duo partners, and a very fun bluegrass spin on the Grateful Dead for this weekend. Enjoy sampling the music below, and we’ll . . .

See you at the show!
Sarah

This continuing series is hosted by resident composer, pianist and jazz master Chuck Lamb with support from music producer Joel Moss. Lamb, who has been a member of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet since 2002, is not only an exciting and emotive pianist in his own right, but also a prolific composer of jazz, fusion, classical and world music. This month’s guest is Wallace Roney Jr., son of world-renowned trumpeter Wallace Roney (Sr.) and acclaimed pianist Geri Allen. Roney Jr. has shared the bandstand and garnered the approval from Chick Corea, Jimmy Heath, Charles Tolliver, Lenny White, Buster Williams, Jack DeJohnette, and the late great Ornette Coleman just to name a few.

JAZZ at Caffe Lena is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Hest finds a home “somewhere on the path where Elliot Smith meets Peter Gabriel.” His relatable songs have been heard on television shows The Path, The Lincoln Lawyer, Private Practice, Army Wives and One Tree Hill. His rich, warm voice and emotive lyrics have been honored with a Grammy-nomination (Best Folk Album) and he’s a favorite singing partner of none other than Judy Collins.

Paxton’s charismatic storytelling and playing showcases phenomenal skill on guitar, banjo, piano, and harmonica, while his vocal delivery is a Southern bluesy throwback a la Fats Waller and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Virtuoso clarinetist-mandolinist-fiddler Lichtman is at the top of the Downtown NYC trad-jazz scene. Let these charming gentlemen take you back to 1920s and 30s!

The Folk Heritage Series is made possible by the support of the
Charlie Pickett & Kathleen Rehl Endowment Fund.

Multi-instrumentalist Matt Turk and Grammy-winner C Lanzbom front Deadgrass, an acoustic, playful bluegrass & psychedelic spin on the music of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Deadgrass takes inspiration from Jerry’s Jug Band days, Old & In The Way, JGB, Grisman/Garcia and The Grateful Dead. Deadgrass’ sound is full of foot-stomping rhythms, blazing solos, and infectious harmonies. “Improv-laden, phenomenal chops, refreshing and fun”! (NYS Music)

In a career that spans six decades, 27 albums and three Grammy awards, troubadour Tom Chapin has performed on Broadway and worked extensively in television, radio and film, as well as on folk stages around the world. Warm and uplifting for all ages.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
Some of the young students in our School of Music have formed a folk band! They call themselves The Rolling Pebbles. 🙂  They enjoyed playing at the Farmers Market in Saratoga last Wednesday. This is a great example of how your support enables a new generation to fall in love with the folk tradition. It’s so gratifying to see kids playing together, making friends, and sharing the joy of music. Thank you!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
