Greetings – It may be raining outside, but you can fill your evenings with warmth and color at Caffe Lena! This week we’re bringing you Texas swing, top-flight jazz, and a nostalgic, amusing night of folk music.
Every time musicians take the stage in a new room in front of a new crowd, something unique happens. This week, the moment is very precious. The Quebe Sisters have announced that, after more than 20 years on the road, they’ll be taking a break for the foreseeable future. The revered John Clayton & Houston Person are releasing their first duo album, and it was produced by our own Joel Moss, who runs our livestreams and has 7 Grammys to his name. Buskin & Batteau are back for the first time in a dozen years. And we present the Saratoga debut of Chicago’s Bassel & The Supernaturals, who travel all over the country spreading goodwill, jazz education, and fabulous music.

The Traveling Wilburys was George Harrison’s brainchild. The band included Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan. Released in 1988, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 is the subject of this month’s Listening Party. You’ll deepen your understanding of the individual performers, hear the songs and learn what went into the making this classic album.
This progressive Western Swing band from Dallas, Texas blends traditional sounds with fresh lyrical themes. Grace, Sophia & Hulda Quebe (pr. KWAY-bee) deliver authentic triple fiddle and Andrews Sisters-style harmonies. They perform a mix of traditional standards (Bob Wills’s “I Can’t Go On This Way,” Hank Williams’s “Cold, Cold Heart”) and originals that will become the standards of tomorrow.
Two jazz legends celebrate their new album in the intimate environs of Caffe Lena! Bassist Clayton is a GRAMMY-winner who plays with Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Queen Latifah and Yo-Yo Ma. Person, with his robust sound and swinging style on tenor sax, has kept hard bop and soul-jazz traditions alive. He has recorded more than 75 albums as a bandleader on Prestige, Westbound, Mercury, Savoy, and Muse, and he has most recently been recording on HighNote. Their brand new album was produced by Saratoga’s own 7-time Grammy-winner, Joel Moss.
For more than 40 years, they’ve given us their “Irresistible amalgam of melodic, sensual pop, folkie grit and killer wit.” (The Washington Post) Popular on the folk circuit from the ’80s on, Buskin and Batteau are musicians, comedians and showmen of the highest caliber. Their humor runs the gamut from topical irony to terminal silliness, but it’s their instrumental virtuosity, soaring vocal harmonies and unparalleled lyric-writing that prompt the standing ovations and rhapsodic reviews.
