We met Oaxacan jazz guitarist Gil Guitierrez when he accompanied the legendary Doc Severinsen on our stage in the summer of 2019. Doc plays many of Gil’s gorgeous compositions, which shine just as brightly in the hands of Gil’s all-star trio.

Greetings – A couple weeks ago I mentioned that a bunch of Caffe Lena folks were nominated for Capital Region Eddies Awards. We have some winners! Traditional Folk Artist of the Year was a tie between Oona Grady & James Gascoyne (our kids’ School of Music teachers) and our long-serving board member Michael Eck. Reese won Americana Artist of the Year, and I won Presenter of the Year. We’re flattered, delighted, and eager to prove that the judges made the right choice.

Our month-long celebration of Caffe Lena’s 63rd Anniversary is underway. We’re looking to add 63 folks to the Caffe Lena family of members. By signing up this month (or renewing a long-expired membership, or upgrading the level of your membership) you will help us put on great shows, welcome the next generation into the folk tradition, and deliver live music where it’s needed most.*  And don’t forget to mark your calendar for Sing In the Streets on May 21. Noon to 3 PM, six stages around the neighborhood filled with music, all welcome!

See you at the show,
Sarah

*Caffe Lena On the Road delivers live music to nursing homes, the soup kitchen, recovery groups, a youth shelter, and numerous other places where a song is needed most.

Lena’s resident composer, pianist and jazz master, Chuck Lamb, has been a member of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet since 2002. Guitarist Dave Stryker is a major figure in the NYC jazz scene. Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” 2022 marks the 15th time Downbeat named him one of the year’s Top Jazz Guitarists.
“I have followed Dave Stryker‘s playing since his early days in Omaha through his long stay with Stanley Turrentine … and he just gets better and better with one of the most joyous feels around.” – Pat Metheny

JAZZ at Caffe Lena is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Duhon is a compelling storyteller with blues and folk inflected melodies that have been praised by Rolling StoneAmerican Songwriter and NoDepression. The later called him “a soulmate of Van Morrison, lyrically and vocally.” Duhon will be performing with his trio.

From the gospel-rock of Sister Rosetta Tharpe to the high-lonesome bluegrass of Claire Lynch and the irresistible swing of Fats Waller, the torchy, honey voice of Annie Rosen takes center stage, with super-tight, expert backing provided by husband Jonny Rosen on guitar, Peter Davis on clarinet, tenor guitar, piano, and vocals, Don Young on bass and vocals and Jerry Marotta on percussion/drums
