Greetings – Looking at this group of artists who will be taking the stage at Caffe Lena this week, a common quality pops out: authenticity. The music is wonderfully diverse, from the elaborate fingerstyle guitar of Beppe Gambetta, to the purity of Bruce’s fiddle and Maeve’s harp; the honesty of Jay Collins’ roots rock, and the arresting truth of Mali Obomsawin’s free-jazz. Each of these artists is striving to create art that is true to their understanding of the world–the way people are, the way intersecting cultures change each other, the way we carry our history in our bones. I hope you enjoy sampling the sounds of the coming week. You can enjoy our shows in-person or from home. Either way, listening to music is like taking a deep breath–and that’s a great way to start your week.

See you at the show,

Sarah

Led Zeppelin IV was released in 1971, 52 years ago, and stands as Led Zeppelin’s best-selling record and one of the best-selling records of all time. Includes fan favorites Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Misty Mountain Hop, as well as Stairway To Heaven. A Rochmon Record Club Listening Party deepens our understanding of the individual performers, songs, and stories behind the making of a classic album. By listening together, we get to hear the music again for the first time.

GRAMMY-nominee Bruce Molsky and Scots harpist and composer Maeve Gilchrist create sheer joy when they play together. Molsky, described as an “absolute master” (No Depression), creates intimacy & warmth on fiddle, banjo and guitar. Grounded in the Irish & Scottish tradition, Maeve’s total command of the harp is entrancing.

Obomsawin is an award winning bassist, songwriter and composer from Abenaki First Nation at Odanak. Her debut album, inspired by field recordings of Abenaki songs along with her training in free-jazz and American roots music, received “Best of 2022” placement in The Guardian, JazzTimes, and NPR. Her music reveals threads that bind together blues, jazz, hymns, folk songs, and Native cultures. “Telling Indigenous stories through the language of jazz is not a new phenomenon,” Obomsawin explains. “My people have had to innovate endlessly to get our stories heard – learning to express ourselves in French, English, Abenaki … but sometimes words fail us, and we must use sound. Sweet Tooth is a testament to this.”

MEMBERS’ CORNER
This past week we were asked by Folk Alliance International to weigh in on a Dept of Homeland Security proposal to raise the cost of artist (and all) visas by more than 250%, to about $1,500 to $2,500 for a short-term tour, plus legal fees for those who need assistance with the complicated application. This would affect bands that play our Nordlys Global Voices series and the Canadian musicians we present. For many small venues, authentic international music is unaffordable. Many communities never get to experience artists from other cultures. We are fortunate to have the support of the Nordlys Foundation as well as our many Members. The cultural exchange and musical diversity you make possible serves more than the Caffe audience. Your donations make it possible to send many of our global artists to local schools for rare and exciting live performances. Thank you!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
