“Ever since I met him years ago, Jake Blount has been aiming to tell the whole story of fiddle and banjo music – black, white, and native. His latest album is an incredible example of historically informed, beautifully played old-time music.”
– Rhiannon Giddens

Greetings – Music is powerful medicine, but it can’t cure every ailment. This weekend something completely novel will take place in our performance space: a Free Health Clinic for uninsured musicians. Forty of them will walk out with a set of custom-fitted earplugs worth more than $200. All will get a multi-point health screening provided by nurses and physicians, help navigating their insurance options, and a promise of any needed follow-up care at no cost via Saratoga Community Health Center. These kinds of things happen because people are generous, they care about each other, and they’re willing to put in the work to make good things happen. Just remember that next time the headlines get you down.
See you at the show,
Sarah

Talk about the healing power of music. Ahhh . . . This melodically eloquent French-Algerian musician invented the DADGAD tuning that is the standard for modern fingerstyle guitarists. His “almost sacred” instrumental music is an intimate and orchestral hymn. Big emotion guaranteed!

Jake Blount Album Release Concert
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

A specialist in the early folk music of Black Americans, and a skilled performer of spirituals, blues and string band folk, Blount is star instrumentalist, scholar & activist. His new album, The New Faith, was released on Smithsonian Folkways last month. It is a stunning undertaking. The songs tell an Afrofuturist story set in a world devastated by climate change. The Black climate refugees perform a religious service, invoking spirituals that are age-old even now, familiar in their content but extraordinary in their presentation. These songs, which have seen Black Americans through countless struggles, bind this future community to each other and to their shared past.

Caffe Lena’s Annual Fund Drive will start in a few weeks. The Drive is more important than ever in this year of lower-than-hoped attendance and higher-than-expected costs. Many of you will be taking a Required Minimim Distribution from your IRA before the end of the year. If you take your withdrawal as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, your IRA will send the funds directly to the nonprofit organization you designate, such as Caffe Lena. You will not have to pay the tax, and you will have the opportunity to support work you believe in. Please be sure to let us know to expect your donation because these checks often arrive with no attribution, and we want to be sure to give you full credit for your generous support! Thank you!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
