“The deeper I’ve gone with this music, the more I’ve come to appreciate the melting pot of immigrant influences that make American music unique. And really, when you look at any beloved American style, from blues to jazz to country to rock, there isn’t just one culture, race, or ethnicity that defines it. These sounds that we love exist in a tangled web of cultural commingling. This is what defines our music, and really our country.” – Clay Ross, founder of Ranky Tanky & American Patchwork Quartet

Greetings – Thanks for taking a moment during your summer day to read this weekly missive. I read a sentence in a book recently that really jumped out at me: “We must take some time each day to restore the soul.” For a lot of you, music does that. There’s an abundance of opportunity in life to strengthen our ability to get things done, stay on task, meet our obligations. But that ain’t the whole story. I hope these shows will send you back out into the world with your soul restored for another day.

Enjoy sampling this week’s music by clicking the photos above and below. See which one speaks to you and buy a ticket. If you haven’t been out for a show in a while, I think this is the perfect weekend to come back to Lena’s.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Recognize that bridge? Yes, the band is from Brooklyn. In the words of Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive, “The RT’s are the pizza of bands – you’re always in the mood for it!” We’re including them in our Bright Series because it’s their first time in the venue, but we know they’ll be a hit because we presented them a couple summers ago in our “Caffe Lena at SPAC” annual festival. Boisterous horns, impassioned vocals, and a driving groove. It’s rock, funk and acoustic pop all rolled into one swaggering, blazing good time!
