Greetings – Two favorite festivals are happening this weekend. Old Songs is a wonderfully curated treasure of the folk world. Their line up has a strong mix of old favorites and new artists. And Freihofer’s Jazz Fest at SPAC is the not-to-be-missed kick off for Saratoga’s summer season. After two years of restricted festivals, this year will be fun the way you remember it.

But come evening, there’s no better place to be than Caffe Lena! I’m really excited about the legendary Bobby Rush, and the fabulous new project, Black Opry. Cliff Eberhardt is coming back! And I’m thrilled to be hosting More Music. Less Violence. on Sunday. Bring your goodwill and hopeful energy this weekend. I think you’ll find yourself in good company.

See you at the show,
Sarah

A GRAMMY winning blues legend, Blues Hall of Famer, 12x Blues Music Award winner and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Bobby Rush is a colorful and enduring character with a unique style that brings together a cracked lyrical bent with elements of blues, soul, and funk. For decades, Rush worked under the radar on the Southern club circuit, but that changed in 2003 when he was featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series The Blues.

Imagine if the country music industry actually represented the full spectrum of real-world country experience. Black Opry Review is a fast-growing collective that is out to bring racial equity and new perspectives to country music. Enjoy three fresh new voices tonight: Roberta Lea, Nikki Morgan and Tae Lewis.  “More than just a rallying point for Black country artists or fans, it has turned into a touring revue that’s filling venues like Nashville’s Exit/In and Tennessee’s Dollywood.”
– Rolling Stone
North Carolina’s Tae Lewis brings his gospel upbringing to country pop music. Roberta Lea hails from Norfolk, VA. Her rich voice is leaving a mark on fans across the south. Nikki Morgan is based in Chicago, where she makes music that unapologetically grapples with real life.

Cliff Eberhardt
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

It’s been way too long since we enjoyed a visit from the brilliant songwriter Cliff Eberhardt. He had a major influence on the folk scene of the ’80s and ’90s and his songs have been covered by Richie Havens, Buffy St. Marie, Erasure, Lucy Kaplansky and many others. His raspy voice and bittersweet guitar and piano melodies find fresh, incisive ways to address the familiar themes of life gone good and bad. From melancholy to sweet optimism, Cliffs songs are the product of a mature and tested performer with the highest level of craftsmanship. And besides all the artistry, he has a devilish wit that will have you in stitches as you prepare for the next great song.

We’re excited to host this do-right project organized by Albany’s DJ Hollyw8d, who believes music brings healing energy, joy, nostalgia, and good vibes. This event will showcase performances by area musical artists as young as 8-years-old and up, and will include a collaborative art project that everyone can participate in. As our communities struggle with violence and division, today we will create space for peace, harmony and joy. Please come out and support this grassroots event.
