Ranky Tanky rocked the crowd last weekend. “We’ve decided Caffe Lena is our official home in the north!” What a wonderful thing to have our music family grow.

Greetings – There’s a lot of new music at the Caffe these days. The pandemic shook up the music world in a big way. Some of the biggest talent agencies in the business shut down, leaving artists without agents, and agents without artists. As things come back together, we’re seeing that rosters are more racially, culturally and stylistically diverse than in 2019. It’s exciting to have access to this breadth of fresh talent. We celebrate new music with the Bright Series. This Thursday, major jamband improviser Tim Snider and his new band Wolfgang Timber will debut as our Bright pick for June.

At the same time, some of our old favorites have decided to stop touring as much, or at all. It becomes all that much sweeter, therefore, to have one of our most enduring performers returning this weekend. Roy Book Binder first played our stage in 1968 and he’s still going strong. If you love classic folk and blues–beautifully played guitar, songs that have stood the test of time, plenty of great stories to make you smile–you will want to come out for the Folk Heritage Series on Saturday night.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Tim Snider and Wolfgang Timber

A world-folk hybrid aimed at the heart, the head and the feet! This band will leave you moved and energized. For years Snider toured with jambands Nahko and Medicine for the People, performing to sold-out crowds at major amphitheaters and stadiums. Now he’s touring with his own band, Wolfgang Timber. “Globe-spanning sounds that incorporate his classical chops as well as a multitude of life experiences. A child violin prodigy, Snider has decades of material under his belt, finding his bread and butter within the jam worlds. Yet it’s his quieter moments as a songwriter that stand out.” Portland Mercury

Roy Book Binder

Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis and Pink Anderson? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna & Bonnie Raitt? Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. Since the late ’60s he has traveled the world as a “keeper of the flame” and ambassador of the blues. His downhome repertoire includes blues, country tunes, bluegrass and folk.

The Folk Heritage Series is made possible by the Charlie Pickett & Kathleen Rehl Endowment Fund

Maswick & Brown
with Opener Jake Sherman

Beautiful harmony vocals over lush acoustic accompaniment. Their expressive voices are the perfect vehicles for their hook-laden, modern folk/pop and contemporary acoustic original songs. Brown is a classical guitarist who has been featured with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Maswick was in the early MTV hit band Blotto. Combine these two seasoned musicians and you get an exquisite evening of music.
