Greetings – I usually write this message on Saturday night in my office right behind the stage. I have a speaker that pipes the live music to my desk. I’m surrounded by musical gear for the kids in the School of Music, loads of old CDs and records, photos of all the beloved audience members and musicians I’ve lost over the years. I have a painting of Elizabeth Cotten and a poster of Pete Seeger. And one of Woody Guthrie where I slapped a Caffe Lena sticker over “This Machine Kills Fascists,” because I’ve always been a little uncomfortable with those words. There’s a wave of energy coming through the bricks as you all listen together. Whether you’re a nurse, teacher, farmer, truck driver, soldier, police officer, activist, mother or banker, I hope this place fills your heart and soul as much as it has mine over the years. Please help keep us strong by coming out for Wednesday’s benefit, listening to the one and only Janis Ian, signing up as a member, strapping on a volunteer apron, or bringing your song to open mic. Thanks for bringing YOU to this community.

See you at the show,
Sarah

JANIS IAN
The Light at the End of the Line

Legendary singer-songwriter Janis Ian is on her final tour, wrapping up a five+ decade career by visiting intimate stages across the country where she can get close to her fans. Since her first breakout hit, written at age 14 (Society’s Child), Ian has been clear-spoken and courageous. More than others, she tackles tender, personal subjects as well as big global themes. Always, her songs tell stories, and her shows create a circle of friends. It’s a tremendous honor to be part of her farewell tour.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
One of the initiatives your membership makes possible is “Caffe Lena On the Road.” This program sends live music to people who don’t usually get to experience it. This past week Lilli Lewis came to town for a couple days to sing and heal. This beautiful note from WAIT House in Glens Falls is really for all of you:

“WAIT House is home to runaway and homeless youth in our community and many youth come to us with trauma, mental health concerns and feel hopeless about
their future. During her visit Lilli took the time to listen to our residents’ stories of how they became homeless with incredible compassion that she carried into her performance. Our residents were inspired and uplifted. Lilli’s visit to WAIT House was truly a gift. My staff and I cannot tell you enough how much we appreciate the time and effort on the part of Caffe Lena and Lilli to bring light into the darkness faced by many of our residents.”

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
