Greetings – This past weekend we welcomed Alash back our stage. We have a fifteen year relationship with this throat-singing band from Tuva, Russia. We’ve followed the birth of numerous children, some of whom are now in their teens. We’ve been excited to hear their English vocabulary grow so we can converse in greater depth. The hurdles they climbed over to get to us this year were jaw-dropping. Securing a travel visa was nearly impossible. It involved a two-week trip to Mongolia, which was almost entirely locked down because of Covid. Then they had to get to Croatia just to get a vaccination that would pass muster for entry in the USA. And then, just as they were leaving Russia, their country went to war, making it all the more difficult and heart-wrenching to leave their families. But making music is both a trade and a calling, and so much had been invested in this tour. Their performance was as beautiful as ever, and they left the Caffe with some generous donations to help offset the many extra expenses of this tour. Once again, we were reminded how music creates friendships across borders, and that is just one of the many reasons we need it in our lives.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Rusticator
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

Rusticator blends favorites from Waylon Jennings and the Grateful Dead into sets of original, wholesome, bittersweet songs. Their acoustic fiddle and guitars are spiced up with pedal steel and drums, giving this popular Albany band a sonic palette closer to gentle country rock than classic folk.

Erin Harpe Duo & Danielle Miraglia
In-person tickets

These two are among New England’s top blues artists. Miraglia (on the left) won the NE Music Awards 2021 Blues Act of the Year and made the Billboard Blues Charts with her new album,”Bright Shining Stars.” With a strong steady thumb on an old Gibson, a raspy voice and an infectious stomp-box rhythm, her songs range from socially conscious to hip-shakers. Harpe is a multi-band leader, producer, indie label owner, singer-songwriter, and guitarist. In addition to a busy touring schedule, she’s an in-demand fingerstyle blues educator who teaches through the esteemed Stefan Grossman Guitar Workshop.

John Craigie

Opener The Lowest Pair

The quietly charismatic Craigie carries on the legacy of classic singer-songwriters with off-the-cuff observations tossed in between brilliant Americana originals. The Stranger dubbed him “the lovechild of John Prine and Mitch Hedberg.” Todd Snider hand-delivered a gift to Craigie on-stage, and Chuck Norris has sent fan mail.

Melissa Ferrick
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

The fast fretwork and intense rock style of their Atlantic Records years are behind them. Ferrick’s new work is more slow, gentle and introspective. They’ve released seventeen albums over twenty-five years and won numerous awards for songwriting, production, and performance. Currently Professor of the Practice at Northeastern, following several years teaching songwriting at Berklee, Melissa still tours regularly throughout North America.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
Our young folk music students played around with a sea shanty last week. (Click their photo to hear them singing.) The point of this unique folk music program is to make music as a social pastime. For as long as there have been people, there have been groups gathering to sing together just to connect, keep up their spirits, and have a good time. In a day and age when kids are bombarded with pressure to become stars and make a splash, this program lets them put fun & friendship first.

It’s a gift we hope will last a lifetime, and it’s all possible
because of your membership support. Thank you!

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
