Greetings –  If you want to stick with concerts, we have some super great options for you this week. Kat Wright! Hailing from Vermont, Kat and her band are making waves coast to coast. Mamma’s Marmalade! Such a fun, young band from western Mass. The legendary Tom Rush! And a watch party of one of the most moving and wonderful shows of 2021, our Bright Series night with Addison Agen.

But I want to take a moment to talk about an event in the list below that is not a concert. Background: folk music is known for its stories. Sometimes those stories told between songs are the best part of the show. There are ballads ancient and new. And there’s a story revealed when you take that 10,000 foot look at what sorts of things we sing about. Clearly, we care a lot about love! We care about people who have been wronged, who triumph over adversity, who get up to no good, who crave forgiveness, and who have a vision for a better world. Our songs hurl us into a moment of emotion that we didn’t see coming. This one from Kat Wright, coming Friday, captures so much of what I’m talking about. This is what drives our work at Caffe Lena.

Well, these same forces drive all the nonprofits working in our community–the groups caring for hungry and homeless neighbors, maintaining nature trails, keeping seniors active and preserving our historic buildings. The folks leading these organizations are deeply moved by love, by the beauty and potential of everyday people, and they want to manifest a vision of fairness and health. It’s creative work. I believe that these stories belong on Lena’s stage, which is why I launched “Art of Community,” an uplifting monthly conversation and gathering for nonprofits. It’s where creativity, connection and learning come together. I hope that makes sense. If you volunteer anywhere, or donate to nonprofits, or care about the challenges these groups address, you belong in the gathering.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Mamma’s Marmalade
In-person tickets

This fun string band from Northampton draws from Appalachia & the Ozarks, adding high-lonesome crooning, whirling steel strings and pop melody.

“…supercharged combustion of string instruments, and indie rock friskiness.” – Glide Magazine

Kat Wright Trio
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

Kat’s sultry, dynamic, delicate & gritty voice is backed by “enough stage presence to tame lions,” and the result is enchanting. With her full band she has been on tour supporting the Wood Brothers. Tonight we get her acoustic trio in the perfect intimacy of Caffe Lena. Her songs are honest, painful in spots, and beautiful all over.

Addison Agen Band
Watch YouTube Premiere

The band came all the way from Wayne, Indiana to debut in our Bright Series on the first weekend we returned to full capacity. Addison was 1st runner-up on Season 13 of NBC’s The Voice but she’s much more than a voice. Her original songs explore nostalgia, acceptance, hopefulness and joy. It was a full band show on a beautiful July night and the room was filled with joy.

*Our in-person show with Mary Fahl previously scheduled for this date had to be canceled.*

TOM RUSH
4 PM: In-person tickets / Watch on Caffe Lena TV
7 PM: In-person tickets Watch on Caffe Lena TV

Tom Rush helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s, the folk-rock movement of the ‘70s, and then the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s. James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty and Garth Brooks have cited Tom as a major influence. We have plenty of seats available and there’s no indication that the room will be crowded. Tom will be joined by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Nakoa.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
When our after-school folk music program meets on Wednesdays, the entire Caffe is taken over by kids. There are fiddlers in the dressing room, ukulele players in the atrium, and a circle of guitarists in the performance space. Then they all join up to play in a big circle. No sheet music. Just carefully listening to the sound of the group and working hard to make it sound beautiful. And it does.
Thank you for passing the folk tradition forward.

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
