Greetings – When I was a kid learning to ride ocean waves, we used to say we got boiled when we caught one wrong and found ourselves tumbling every which way. The current wave of the pandemic has us feeling a little topsy turvy, but we’re encouraged by the news that it should be ebbing soon. We’re living up to our commitment to bring you a show every night, but the schedule is not quite the way we planned it. Please scroll down for updates.

To my way of thinking, there’s nothing like traditional music to keep your head screwed on straight during unsettling times. We’re lucky to be debuting as part of the Bright Series one of the leading voices in traditional music today, Jake Xerxes Fussell. Every once in a while someone comes along who has a special ability to bring old songs into today’s world and win a new audience for them. Jake is one of those people. (Click his photo above for a sample.) He’s playing NPR’s hugely popular Tiny Desk Series this Tuesday, which will put him and his brand new album in front of hundreds of thousands of new listeners. And then, God willin’, he comes to our stage on Saturday!

See you at the show or in the live chat,
Sarah

Free stream of the band’s last in-person show at Lena’s on June 2, 2019

The band, most unfortunately, has come down with a case of Covid. They’re recovering quickly and we’ve rescheduled for September. They’re delighted to welcome you to a watch party of this previously unreleased gem from Lena’s vault! If you’re one of those people who likes any style done well– old-school jazz, folk, pop, classical–you’ll love this prodigiously talented threesome. Keyboards, brass, all sorts of strings, and beautiful singing made for a great night.

Cory Branan
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

His five albums have garnered critical acclaim from NPR, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, with one critic calling him, “A country boy with a punk-rock heart.” This Memphis songwriter balances audacity and subtlety, humor and heartbreak. He’s a great storyteller, loves John Prine, plays with Jason Isbell. He has appeared on Letterman, played the Ryman, and hit plenty of outlaw country stages in between.
This is his first visit to Saratoga. We were tossed up about which of this weekend’s shows should be designated for the Bright Series, because Cory is a great candidate as well. But Jake has the new album, so there ya go.

“The leading interpreter of American folk music right now” — NPR Music

“Jake Xerxes Fussell is the rare contemporary to approach folk in its pure form, shunning self-penned compositions about bummer relationships to concentrate on material handed down from bygone, hardened times.”
The New Yorker

Fussell was raised on the traditional music of the Georgia-Alabama border. His new album, Good and Green Again, was released one week ago. With a voice made for storytelling, Jake has appeared on stages across the country, and numerous times on NPR and public television. His NPR Tiny Desk set will air this Tuesday. Jake is the perfect choice for our Bright Series, which brings to our stage exciting new voices in roots music.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
Well over 1,000 poeple have watched Caffe Lena’s tribute to Bill Staines, streamed live last Saturday night. The musicians did a beautiful job playing Bill’s songs, Chris Shaw emceed with love and humor, and the in-person audience managed to sing along through their masks and tears. This event meant a lot to the folk community. We were able to provide it because you have made Caffe Lena into a capable organization with the tools to serve a national audience. Your donations are having an impact well beyond the walls of our listening room. Thank you.

Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
