Greetings – Well, here we are riding a very familiar wave again. I know it’s discouraging to be back in masks, keeping our distance, and wondering if this spike will be behind us in another month or so. All I can say is, sharing music with other people will keep your spirits up so make sure you’re taking advantage of what Caffe Lena has to offer.

And, YES, we are offering a lot on this MLK Weekend! Caffe Lena was born during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Lena and Bill Spencer’s first weekend featured Jackie Washington, a Black-Puerto Rican folksinger who was being hailed as “the male Joan Baez.” A few years later Lena gave Bernice Johnson her first professional singing job. Johnson founded The Freedom Singers, who performed at civil rights events across the country, including at the March on Washington alongside Dr. King. We’re excited to present the passionate faith music of The Campbell Brothers on Saturday and a full day and evening of events with MLK Saratoga on Sunday.

We are continuing to welcome an in-person audience with strong safety precautions in place. We have two high-capacity HEPA filtration units in the performance space, UV lighting scrubbing the air in the HVAC system, we require proof of vaccination from everyone on site, and in accordance with Gov. Hochul’s current guidance, everyone other than the performers will have a mask on. Our kitchen is open. Our straws are made of biodegradable paper. Give your mask the Fauci Flip when eating and drinking.

See you at the show,
Sarah

They play gospel music from the African-American Holiness-Pentecostal repertoire with a new twist: steel guitar, played as you have never heard it played before. Composed of three brothers and one son, the Campbells are credited with bringing Sacred Steel music to secular stages, including shows with the Allman Brothers.
