Greetings – We just finished the busiest run of shows we’ve had since the first week of March, 2020. Booster shots are happening, kids are getting vaccinated, and families are starting to get back to the things they love doing. Covid isn’t over and we’re still playing it very safe here, but confidence is growing. Well done, folks!

What an incredible week we have ahead of us! We’re talking about artists with recent Grammy nominations & features in the New York Times; top bluegrass, jazz & instrumental music. We know some of these names will be new to you so we created a Spotify playlist for your tasting pleasure. If you’re having trouble deciding when to come, we’ve provided a list of staff recommendations. Enjoy exploring!

See you at the show,
Sarah

JAZZ at Caffe Lena
Chuck Lamb Trio featuring Michael Dease
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

Once again, our resident jazz master Chuck Lamb has enticed one of the leading figures in jazz to join his trio onstage at Caffe Lena! Trombonist Michael Dease is an in-demand session artist, with more than 200 recordings to his name. He is on albums by Grammy-winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michael Camilo, and Alicia Keys. Beyond the studio, he is seen on stages around the world with big bands, and in classrooms as a teacher. Born in Augusta, GA, Dease moved to New York City in 2001 to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at Julliard, and he hasn’t slowed down since!

Karrin Allyson
In-person tickets

The jazz feast continues with 5x Grammy-nominee Karrin Allyson. She goes beyond the core jazz repertoire with unexpected covers of Bonnie Raitt, some sweet Brazilian pop, and she released a remarkable album in 2019, Shoulder to Shoulder, that tackles gender justice issues and celebrates women’s suffrage. What an honor to have this great artist on our stage for the first time!

He cites Robert Johnson, Stevie Wonder and Parliament Funkadelic when describing his broad approach to music. His own bands have explored everything from thrash to folk. He served as guitarist and vocalist in John Mayer’s band for eight years. He has co-written songs with India.Arie, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and many others. The smooth, beautiful songs you’ll hear tonight represent DRH “sending up a flare into the darkness from where I live. It’s a soulful look into my life. My past and how it informs my present. My sense of hope, my sense of humor.”

The Folklife Series at Crandall Library has packed the house once a month for years for all sorts of folk and roots artists, famous and emerging. They are not ready to resume at their customary location at Crandall Library, so they’re using Caffe Lena to present this show celebrating the release of Dan Hubb’s new book of poems, Downtown Super Tells All (Troy Book Makers). He’d rather play music than read poems, so expect an up tempo set of Old-Time & original songs by Dan, with Frank Orsini on fiddle and JP Hubbs on keyboards. The book will be available for purchase.

BRIGHT SERIES: Yasmin Williams
In-person tickets
Watch on Caffe Lena TV

Perhaps you noticed that Sarah, Brian and Vivian all picked this show as the one they’re most looking forward to this month. Yasmin is a fast-rising fingerstyle guitarist who plays six-string, harp guitar and kalimba–sometimes all in one piece. Her music is some of the prettiest we’ve heard. We honored to host her Capital Region debut.

New York Times: The Face of Solo Guitar Is Changing. It’s About Time.

One of the most celebrated young bluegrass bands on the circuit today. They switched up their line-up recently, gaining Ella Jordan on fiddle and Korey Brodsky on mandolin. Expect brilliant playing, original songwriting that packs an emotional punch (definitely click their photo), and classic rock and pop covers that are incredibly fun and impressive.
