Greetings – We’ve been experiencing the most extraordinary concerts lately. The feeling is special in part because many in the audience and on the stage have been starved for live music for so long. And it’s partly that barriers crumbled during the pandemic. I refer to the barriers that would have prevented some of our recent artists from playing such a small room. Or barriers that would have defined a style of music as not appropriate for our room. But there are few venues open, and few artists on tour, so we’re all taking chances on each other–and it has been wonderful! Win-win-win for musicians, for Caffe Lena, and especially for YOU.

The newcomers this week are The Bones of J.R. Jones and Ultrafaux. Click their photos to get a taste of the great sounds they’ll be bringing to our stage. Coincidentally, we have two of our favorite fiddlers coming this weekend:  Sara Milonovich, who pulls potent indie rock and alt country out her instrument, and Bruce Molsky, who transports us to the ancient wooded hills and hollers of Appalachia.

See you at the show,
Sarah

Fiddler Sara Milonovich has been packing the house at Caffe Lena since she was 11 years old. She has grown from child prodigy to mature artist with a taste for powerful indie rock arrangements and big themes. Sara’s new album shows her love of small towns and farm life, and takes aim at the threats they face. This is a major theme in her life. She founded Rootstock, a musical festival that supports the next generation of Northeast farmers, and she works closely with nonprofits dedicated to preserving farmland. That’s why Sustainable Saratoga is co-presenting with us tonight.

Who will get the last table for the debut of this amazing new addition to our roster? Jonathan Robert Linnaberry delivers a spare, southern gothic sound with acoustic guitar, drum machines, analog synths, vibraphone, and a rich, dark Magnatone amp. He’s daring, organic, truthful and otherworldly in a way that is beautiful.

Baltimore happens to be home to a thriving Gypsy Jazz scene, and Ultrafaux is one of its most popular acts. In fact, they’ve toured well beyond the city limits, taking their act to mainstages at the world’s most prominent Gypsy Jazz gatherings. With one foot planted firmly in Gypsy swing, they season their setlists with be-bop, Balkan, Bluegrass, funk, blues, choro & musette. Sound like fun? You bet it is!
Ultrafaux will welcome special guest Jonathan Greene on clarinet.

Darol Anger nicknamed Bruce “The Rembrandt of Appalachian Fiddlers,” an appellation that may sound amusing until you hear him play. Back in the ’70s Bruce headed south from his Bronx home to soak up Appalachian mountain music from its legendary pioneers who are now long gone. He is regarded as one of the foremost ambassadors for old-time mountain music, taking this American folk style to stages around the world. He’s a 2x Grammy-nominated fiddler, banjoist and true country gentleman.

MEMBERS’ CORNER
The first “Troubadour In Training” class graduated on Friday afternoon with a recital for friends and family. Standing on stage with fiddles, ukuleles, a bass, bodhran, and plenty of guitars, our five young musicians assured us that folk music has a bright future. Our donors have grown the Caffe Lena School of Music from zero to nearly 400 students over the past year. Thank you!Caffe Lena has nearly 1,000 active members. These folks are planting songs and growing community with their annual donations. They also get the best seats in the house, early access to special shows and some neat swag. Learn More
