Saturday, September 1  •  8 PM     Ashdown Brothers
$8/7

Blending the musical influences of songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and James Taylor with the spiritual influences of their upbringing, The Ashdown Brothers of Schuylerville play contemporary Christian music with a decidedly folk flair.
They back up their beautiful harmonies with guitar, mandolin, violin and percussion.

This months' featured readers are local authors Mary Sanders Shartle, Marilyn McCabe and Elaine Handley, winners of Best Book of Poetry in the 2nd Annual Adirondack Literary Awards for books published in 2006 for their collection, Glacial Erratica.
Their previous collection, Notes From the Firetower—Three Poets on the Adirondacks, was the winner in the same category for 2005.

Friday, September 7  •  8 PM     Faith Healer
$15/12   By Ireland's Foremost Playwright, Brian Friel

Frank Hardy, an Irish faith healer, travels the remote villages of Scotland and Wales attempting to cure the sick and the desperate with a gift he doesn't understand himself and which works only fitfully. He receives tremendous support from his loyal and fiercely-loving wife Grace, and delightfully garrulous cockney manager, Teddy?
Through a series of four monologues, all three describe the same basic events, but there are fundamental differences which reveal a great deal about the person doing the talking. What shines through in this dark and sombre tale that will have you on the edge of your seat wiping away tears, is the power of love, both as a blessing and a curse.

Saturday, September 8  •  8 PM     Michael Jerling
$15/12
michaeljerling.com

One of our favorite local sons, Michael Jerling, is a nationally touring songwriter who happens to live here in Saratoga and who has played annually at Lena's for decades. His dry wit, poignant insights and broad taste in American roots music drive a repertoire that is alternately comic, touching, and rocking.
His delightfully melodic sound is accented by Teresina Huxtable on reed organ and accordion, and Tony Markellis on bass.

Sunday, September 9  •  7PM     Jeanne O'Connor
$12/10
jeanneoconnor.net

Jazz singer Jeanne O'Connor makes her Caffè Lena debut with a special concert celebrating the release of her new CD, Something's Coming. She brings her clear, expressive alto voice to the Great American Songbook, Brazilian music, pop, and R&B.
She has performed as a soloist with jazz combos and big bands throughout the New York City region and beyond. She has appeared at the Blue Note, the Rainbow Room, the Cat Club, and many other jazz clubs.
Jeanne, who is now living in Saratoga, will be backed by Peg Delaney on piano, Pete Toigo on bass, and Pete Sweeney on drums.

Friday, September 14  •  8 PM     Ray Bonneville
$15/12
www.raybonneville.com

Bonneville cooks up a gumbo of American roots stylings with an irresistible magic ingredient: deep groove. His thumb pulses and thumps, his index finger hooks and brushes out a melody, and his hand slaps the guitar for a snare-like effect. Along with an amplified footboard it's a powerful backdrop to his weathered voice and in-demand harmonica playing.
Ray has won a Juno Award in his native Canada and has headlined major festivals across North America. If you haven't yet tasted his music, this is the right artist to take a risk on.

Saturday, September 15  •  8 PM     Cavanaugh & Kavanaugh
$12/10
www.cavandkav.com

This husband and wife duo, who just happen to share the same last name in pronunciation if not spelling, have been a long time part of the Capital District music scene. They are talented multi-instrumentalists (banjo, guitar, piano, mandolin, dulcimer, limberjack) who share a commitment to music as a way of life.
Much of their repertoire draws from the Irish and Southern Old Time tradition, which they share with warmth and humor in coffeehouses, schools, libraries and festivals. A perfect choice for the whole family.

Sunday, September 16  •  7 PM     Tom Winslow
$12/10

Tom is an old-school country bluesman, picking and singing in a classic style. He studied with Rev. Gary Davis, collaborated with Pete Seeger, and released an album on the Biograph label.
He first came to Saratoga to work with the horses and has for many years enjoyed playing gigs around the area, including at Lena's. Come out to enjoy a night of classic blues and spirituals with a seasoned craftsman.

Friday, September 21  •  8 PM     The Barefoot Boys
$12/10
www.richbala.com/BarefootBoys.htm

Rich Bala, Tom White and Rick Hill are bearded, bespectacled, balding, and barefoot, but these manly men make mayhem with their mean mountain music! You'll relish their rollicking renditions of regional folk songs and instrumental medleys on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, concertina, bass, and mountain and hammered dulcimers.
Taconic Press says "You'll find yourself tapping your feet and singing along ... timeless stories and songs played with expertise, feeling, and a sense of humor." A proven hit with all ages!

Saturday, September 22  •  8 PM     The Strangelings
$15/12   With Special Guest Jud Caswell
www.myspace.com/thestrangelings

Pete and Maura Kennedy always loved the celtic flavored rock of the '60s and '70s. They've recently teamed with fellow-minded alt folk musicians Ken Anderson and Rebecca Hall and songstress Chris Thompson to create The Strangelings.
Their signature piece, ³The Nuah Suite,² is a chain of myth-based, enigmatic songs, a rich blend of goddess imagery and classical themes drawn from around the world, woven into a complex fabric that flows like an orchestral sonata.
Think Jethro Tull meets Fairport Convention while channeling Ravi Shankar.

$12/10   Gary Moon, Kate Blain & Phil Henry
www.garymoontunes.com
www.kateblain.com
philhenryband.com

We've enjoyed having each of these three musicians solo at Caffè Lena. Now that they've formed a trio we're enjoying a musical experience even greater than the sum of the parts. There's the infectious camaraderie of friends, the blend of varied instruments, and the beautiful vocal harmonies on a wide range of contemporary folk songs.
Kate hosts open mic at Lena's and Old Songs. Both Phil and Gary have taken first place at Vermont's SolarFest songwriting competition. All have released their own albums and maintain a busy performance schedule.

Sunday, September 30  •  7 PM     Eastern Blok
$15/12
www.easternblok.net

If fiery-hot instrumentalists are your cup of tea, then you can't go wrong with Eastern Blok. This quartet interprets Eastern European folk tunes through the lens of jazz. Ivanovic, a Croatian guitar virtuoso noted for his lightning-fingered finesse and complex arrangements, has teamed up with Doug Rosenberg on saxophone, Matthew Ulery on bass, and Michael Caskey on drums.
Together, they consistently create beautiful music without borders. The Los Angeles Times considers their music "relentlessly innovative." Time Out calls Goran "an agile Bela Fleck in Croatia."
