Friday, August 5  @  8 PMROWAN BROTHERS$15/12

Chris and Lorin Rowan arrived on the national stage back in the '70s, and they've been important players in the Americana scene ever since. Their early work with David Grisman lead to gigs with the Grateful Dead and ongoing collaboration with Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann and other major names. Their new album, "Now and Then" (BOS Music), features trademark vocal harmonies, exuberant interaction, and an exciting mix of bluegrass-flavored folk and Everly Brothers style rock and country laced with crisp guitar, mandolin and steel guitar picking. Over the years, Rowan songs have receive steady play from artists ranging from Jefferson Starship to the title track on long-time fan Ricky Skaggs' Grammy Award winning CD, "Soldier of the Cross," written by Lorin. Susan Trump uses her mountain dulcimer and banjo to take listeners on a journey away from the bustle and cynicism of modern life, back to the pastoral and tranquil rural America of yesteryear. Her theme has struck a chord with listeners and she regularly sells out concerts, especially at Caffe Lena. Her new album, "Songs of Faith and Hope," features familiar favorites like "Quiet Faith of Man," "Hope for One and All," and a favorite from Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, "Down in the Valley to Pray." Tuesday, August 9  @  7 PMUTAH PHILLIPS AND THE ROSE TATOO$25
www.utahphillips.org
Dubbed the "Golden Voice of the Great Southwest," Utah has earned a devoted following for his tales, guitar music and songs, which he has shared among the folk family for four decades. Beloved as a rabble-rouser and individualist, he extols self-reliance and encourages people to stop depending on government or corporations, and to toss their televisions out the window. At a time when most men would be retiring to the lawn chair in the back yard, he continues to perform, host a radio series, and release records with Ani diFranco. The Rose Tattoo, of which he is Grand Master, is a widely dispersed band of nomads with the motto "mors ante servitium" which translates to "death before employment." Although this show is recommended to families, especially to "young people who think they know everything," you should know that you will probably hear appalling puns, be told terrible lies, be moved to both laughter and tears, and will probably find yourself singing along, even though you don't usually do that sort of thing. Welcome back to Saratoga, Utah!!  See: All Music Guide

Saturday, August 13  @  8 PMSARAH LEE GUTHRIE AND JOHNNY IRION
$15/12
www.sarahleeandjohnny.com
Lately this duo has cranked it up a notch and brought some electricity to their mix of country rock and down-home, back-porch ballads. Their spine-tingling vocal harmonies are still front and center, but now they're supported by Johnny's scintillating electric lead and slide guitar to produce a vibe that's something like the Carter Family meets Crazy Horse. The musical richness and psychological depth of their recently released first full-length album, "Exploration," is irrefutable proof that the disarming granddaughter of Woody/daughter of Arlo and her prodigious South Carolinian husband quite naturally bring out the best in each other.  See: All Music Guide

Saturday, August 27  @  8 PMPAUL RISHELL AND ANNIE RAINES$14/12
www.paulandannie.com/mt
Singing blues guitarist Paul Rishell and his harmonica-blowing partner Annie Raines have fashioned an impressive career for themselves with refreshing rearrangements of vintage blues, mostly of the rural sort. Winners of a W.C. Handy Award for Blues Album of the Year, Paul and Annie have performed on diverse radio and TV shows, recorded with Susan Tedeschi, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block, and continue to tour as members of John Sebastian's J-Band. With their new album, "Goin' Home," (Tone-Cool) the duo once again shows a gift for granting new life to old neglected songs, with graceful playing and singing that transcends genre to reach a common place in the human heart. The album is already in line for two more Handy Awards.  See: All Music Guide
